This will be my entry for the Helicopter GB

Probably no AM on this one. Mostly OOB.

Pre start shots

Going to go with a grey finish as per pics

It's a wasted trip baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.

Good one Andrew, I have been contemplating building this for my helo gb entry as a lot of the colours are the same as the flogger, and from the builds I have read online other than the windscreen it is a relatively straight forward (if very large) build. If I get some bench time this weekend (which I may well do) I may pull the trigger and haul it out and make a start.
I do like the gunship grey scheme that you've chosen but I think I will still go with the Hind sand and green scheme, as below.

I think I will forego the PE as well, online builds show that once the cockpit is assembled and in the fuselage you can see almost none of it so the extra money for it isn't really worth it. The exterior set does look nice but once again, it is rather expensive, almost half of what I paid for the kit...

Just for everyone who is wondering how big this is, in 1/72 the length from rotor tip to tail is approx 56cm and rotor diameter is approx 44cm...payload is 20,000kg or 90 troops compared to a herc at 20,400kg or 92 passengers...

I found a guy from ARC's photobucket account and he has heaps of reference pics of the Halo in East Timor, including some good cockpit shots and great pics of the interior... Man it is big...
Pics here

One other thing, it has been confirmed by several people in the know that when the rear doors are open the tail bumper retracts into the tail boom, so as to avoid being collected by any vehicles entering or exiting the cargo hold. Apparently most people model it with the doors open and the bumper still down but it should be retracted with the doors open.
I was thinking maybe I should find a 1/72 BTR to put in the cargo hold, or coming down the ramp...

Edit:: Found another guy's photobucket account with more pics of the Halo in the Congo, here .

The photo above - with the tiny little men running out - shows the doors open and the bumper still down. I guess they're not likely to bump their heads though. :P

I like the BTR idea - definitely needs something to give a sense of scale to it.

There must be some kind of manual control to retract the bumper, depending on the cargo B)

Doors open, bumper down, unloading troops

Doors open, bumper up, unloading BMD-3

I need to find the colour match for the Grey, and then have a think about decals for the ID codes

I completely missed that pic with the troops coming out. Perhaps it's tied to the ramp instead of the doors then? It's hard to make out but it might be that the ramp isn't all the way down in that pic or there may be a manual override for the bumper. Either way, the info I read about it was from people who had been on them or russian aircraft experts.

Looks pretty close to gunship grey to me, or maybe just a tad darker. You'll also have to scratch the flare packs on the side of the fuselage as I'm pretty sure the kit doesn't come with them.

Edit: the kit does come with the flare packs so you are good in that respect.

Found a video that shows the tail bumper is up, ramp is up but the tail bumper then drops down right before the clamshell doors close. With the timing it looks automatic so still not sure but the vast majority of pics and videos I can find with the doors open and ramp down the bumper is almost always up, but then most are with the engines off.
Check the 1:25 mark in the video to see the bumper drop.

As you can tell it's a quiet day at work
Found another youtube clip which is a 40 min documentry on the Halo.

It's in russian but the footage is pretty good (from what I've seen of it...)
No doubt I'll post more stuff soon.

Righto, some more stuff.
First, more pics off the same airframe Andrew first shared, ramp is definitely down so there must be an override if they are just carrying troops for the tail bumper.

Now a stock pic from a demonstration loading an APC, tail bumper is definitely up.

And the best place for reference pics of all things russian that fly, and for this link specifically the Halo, look here .

Begemot do a big decal sheet for the Halo, sadly no markings for the dark grey ones but plenty for other airforces, including one for Samsung in South Korea...
You can find it here . I think Von Drinkoften used the Begemot decals on his Flagon and reckoned they were pretty good.

Making further progress with pre build research.

Have found Akan 73166 is a direct match for the Grey on the Halo :woohoo: Just need to find a cheap source of the Russian produced acrylic paint

Getting closer with markings too. Begemot have these two sets of modern Russian markings

Just need to sort the larger code numbers now. G2 is checking his stash. I've even emailed Begemot to see if they have anything suitable, or whether they will make a set
