1937 C-65 Farm Crawler @ 24th scale was created by turtle65
Hi all,
First showing of my work here so be gentle with me  .
Was a bit bored with wheeled things so wanted to try something else  , after pestering some Russian contacts and trawling the web I finally had enough info to start the build (note. I'm too cheap to by Trumpeters version  , plus it's the wrong scale :( ).
So armed with a pack of fresh blades and some plastic sheet, let the fun commence,
 First off, better show what I'm attempting:

And now the first bit of hack'n'slash:

More to follow _ _ _ _

Feel free to point out any shoddy workmanship, inaccuracies etc. etc. - best way for me to try and improve is by using "fresh eyes and minds".
Cheers for popping in for a nosey.

For plans etc. I have a copied set of the original blueprints plus an original parts manual (has scaled drawing of the majority of parts). All measuring and marking out is done with calipers and lines very lightly scribed onto the plastic (a moist finger rubbed over them makes it easier to see). I never transfer dimensions with pencil.

Cheers for those that have had a gander. Hopefully I won't bore you too much :) .

On with the build:
Started assembling the transmission/final drive area:

Then thought I'd slosh some glue around and give the box a shake to see what happens :cheer: :

Almost starting to resemble something  .
As usual feel free to point out any inaccuracies, rough areas etc.

Very fine work so far. The trouble with the boring stuff is that its often the stuff that sells the final product. Watching watching.

Very cool project.
I think I see one of these or something very like it, parked in a field on the outskirts of Dargaville, every time I go to Auckland.

But please don't be shy to question any areas that don't look right or are a bit rough  . Fresh eyes are always the best method of critique.
Wally - definitely not one of these but most likely a Caterpillar Sixty or Sixty Five. This is a Soviet licenced copy of the Caterpillar Sixty Five, albeit with modifications to suit Soviet industrial methods etc.

There's a joke about Dargaville in there, but that would be too easy

Awesome work there Turtle. The parts with the rounded edges, is that a solid piece of styrene that has been shaped back to get the radius or have you molded the styrene around the curve?

Hi grover,
all the curved 'boxes' are .5mm sheet wrapped over/around a base structure. Quickest and easiest method for doing curved areas.

Time for a quickie (minds out of gutter please gent's :P ),
Couple of innocent looking pieces but an absolute pain to build. Hard to see in the photo's but the rear plate has a bend in it so of course the front sections needed similar  . Still have to give them a quick swipe with steel wool to get rid of the scruffy edges :) :
Balance beam trunnions:

Just plodding along - I ain't the quickest of builders so bare with me :silly: .
Cheers for having a gander

Have just found a couple of rather large botch-ups :pinch: , so at the moment this project is on the verge of meeting the bin, however maybe after I've calmed down a bit I might just move it to the 'shelf of shame' for a while.
Have checked and triple checked measurements but still can't work out where I've messed up  .
Not being shy of showing my mess-ups and failures, here you go:

The two arms coming off the track frames are NOT meant to intersect, unfortunately it's not just a case of shortening these pieces as this will throw out other pieces further along in the build - darned annoying.

As stated, best I move this out of sight for a while.
Ta for having a looksie.

Recommended calm down remedy
Deep breath, strong rum ( or something similar ) to be taken 2-3 times in quick succession, rest tv maybe then back to build.
LOL

Cheers guys.
Nah, going to do a couple of quick'n'easy (nice'n'sleazy) builds so I don't fall back into the detail/accuracy obsession burnout syndrome, however I might just plod on with a few other areas of the crawler. plenty of other half-started half-finished projects laying around to keep me amused  .

Cheers to all,
Decided I'd make a start on the engine. Probably not the smartest move at the moment  . Have studied all the drawings and plans available and basically I've broken it down into 60 - yes - sixty - subassemblies (I must be insane, maybe I should do the Trumpeter kit trick and chuck in an engine sump and put the engine covers on  ) - nah too easy.

Anywho, here be the 1:1 to have a gander at:

and my rather meager start:

As always feel free to point out any questionable/shoddy workmanship etc.
Cheers for taking time to have a look

Hi all,
Thought I'd circumnavigate the "problem area" and plod on with various other areas, so today I managed to get some hack'n'slash done plus slop some glue around and made a couple more pieces for the jigsaw puzzle :)

Not what I had started out planning to build but thats half the fun of the hobby  .
Cheers for popping in for a nosey, as always comments good/bad or indifferent always welcome.

Hi all,
after a burst of enthusiasm I dragged this darling out of hiding and I finally worked out where/how I've messed up (i.e. parts not aligning etc.).
For some unexplainable reason it appears I switched scale mid-build - started with 24th scale plans and dimensions then changed to 25th scale.
So now I've discovered where I've really messed up now it's decision time:
Option 1 - bin the 24th parts and rebuild in 25th (or vice versa)
Option 2 - bin the lot and start fresh
Option 3 - just walk away and write it off as a 'learning experience'
Think I'll sleep on this for a while.
Hope everyone else's projects are proceeding better than mine :)

Well this vehicle has really been bugging me, so after some serious debating and arguments with myself (yep I'm taking pills for that problem :P ) I've decided I gave up too easily and it deserves a second attempt (breaks one of my Golden Rules :pinch: ), so having checked and double checked ALL plans and dimensions are to a constant scale it's almost time to start again :woohoo: .

This time I will get things right and follow a more logical sequence :)
