Sci-Fi & Fantasy Group Build
The main criteria for this build is to have fun!
(Build dates: Saturday 24 October 2015 - Saturday 15 October 2016)

Proudly brought to you by Kiwi Modeller in conjunction with Mighty Ape!

The Universe is vast beyond measure, and within it exists untold dimensions. Beyond these is “Te Kore” - The Nothingness. In between the reality of our existence and Te Kore “The Kiwi Modeller Sci-Fi and Fantasy Group Build”!
Parameters for this Group Build
Pretty much any subject is allowed, as long as it’s not real. Examples include Gunpla / Macross / Gundam, TV/movie models, Warhammer, Apocalypse, Steam Punk, Sci-Fi, Bio-Mechanical, Fantasy, Figurines (not based on real people). Out of box, aftermarket and scratch built all allowed. 3D printed items are also allowed but must be totally created by you, not edited from someone else’s work or had elements imported. No partially started kits or work allowed. Entrants must have been be KM members for at least 2 months. Normal vetting for any cynical entries as usual.

All entries must have a build log posted in the group build forum presenting regular progress. Judging will be by community vote and possibly guest judge (to be confirmed). Prize(s) are also to be confirmed. Entries are welcome from KM members outside of NZ and if you win a prize you just need to pay the international shipping. Voting will run for the week following the 15th October 2016, ending at midnight on the 22nd October. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote. An affordable donation to Kiwmodeller.com is always much appreciated from those participating.
Thanks, and Enjoy!

Yes it will be a challenge to use some of these parts as they are EXTREMELY small :P But use some I will certainly attempt . . .

Here is the motor 'n box to date:
Blower; Manifold; Carbies have all been de-chromed along with the belts and pulleys which are in painting process at mo. Supercharger front drive is the resin "Parts Box" replacement and I need to extend the drive shaft of that about 4mm to connect with the upper pulley, once installed. All paints are predominantly Tamiya acrylics with a couple of mixes which included either Humbrol and/or Lifecolor acrylics. Yes it looks all nice and shiney at present but by the time the model is finished it won't look like that ( gunged, greased and dirtied and dusted it will be).
Sorry about the crap images, try holding an SLR in one hand and the model parts on a stick in the other and not getting some shakin' going on. :P

Thanks for the positivity all. :)

Some small progress. (Still waiting on more parts to arrive) :P
Completed cleanup and painting of the Supercharger pulleys and belts plus manufacture of Blower driveshaft and idler pulley mount and assemble that lot onto the motor.
As this engine is not the stock kit part, there are no front mounts for it so I manufacture, 'post apocalypse style' ones for it and mount those.
I cut the top of the Distriburor off and replaced that with 'Detail Master' AM parts and have added plug leads to the mix and a heavy duty coil wire which will go to the Accel Super-coil which is also AM from 'The Parts Box'. Fuel lines and other fittings are yet to be installed. Also added an Alternator mounting bracket from AM parts.
Once engine is in place and the cab/engine bay is placed over that we 'have a problem Houston'. The front chassis cross-member is in the way of the bottom pulley and the radiator is too far forward and will not fit over/around the front pulleys and belts. :silly: duoh. Post apocalypse fix in order . . . Cut and paste :P so to speak.

As the front pulley mounted fan no longer fitted quite right, I repurposed it with a little imagination and some cutting from the "Hmmm, this might be useful" parts supply, turning it into a dystopian electric one. :P

I now have to take about half a millimetre from the back of the front grill so that it will fit in place without any pressure being applied.

YAY, I got over the brick wall called No Modelling Mojo. :cheer: ;)
Along the way I have picked up yet another donor kit :P thanks to the great pricing to be had at Scale Models Expo in Upper Hutt a few days back.
This is it:

Attachment HiluxLiftUpKit.jpg not found

Quite a few of the parts I will use are chromed up, so Into the Mr Muscle they will go...

Attachment HiluxChrome.jpg not found

And come out all "Not Shiny". Well actually not chromed but with a very shiny surface still happening.

Attachment HiluxPartsDe-Chromed.jpg not found

So the build continues . . .

I am going to go Lift Up modern style. Yes, a 1977 GMC 4x4 Pickup body and deck mounted on a 1992 Toyota Hilux Double Cab Ute chassis.
The main differences being construction methods, the narrower assembly in the engine bay area and the Japanese model being slightly shorter. Front suspension is a significant difference, being upper and lower A Arm Independent type with anti-sway bar and torsion mountings. Both are 4x4 drives with similar application.

Just the kind of thing some mad dystopian society might build :P

I have had to make some minor mods to the chassis front and fabricate engine mounts; Toyotas don't come with Blown 454 Chevy V8's installed.
I have also had to remove the exhaust pipe fronts from the manifolds as they got in the way of the chassis and the engine would not sit properly. Those will need to be fabricated and will largely come over the chassis and out the sides. A longer gearbox lower mount was needed and I have measured, marked and drilled to move the rear springs and diff back 5mm. I have cut the rear petrol tank out from the old chassis mount and remodelled it to fit into the rear of the new one.
There will be quite a bit of heavy metal (plastic) to be added for mounting the cab and deck and the front and rear chassis strengthening to mount heavy stuff on. ;)

Pictures to follow soon . . .

Wow, that's all out! I'm not concentrating too much on the underside, or the engine, as you're not going to be seeing either (will be on a basic dio base). Kit is too basic, and would take some major surgery, and tools I don't have access of to make it as detailed as that :)

Good on you for going all out like that though, it's going to be amazing seeing it all come together

Sweet, I've seen similar chop jobs on West Coast Customs where they put a '68 Dodge Charger body on a 2007 Dodge Charger chassis B)

It's a wasted trip baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.

Hey Thanks for the positives folks. :)
I have decided to detail the underbelly of the beast and get some chassis mounts sorted whilst at that.
Here is what has been happening:
Just figured that the underbelly was way too basic and all incomplete, with open insides of fenders and such . . .

Attachment UndersideFloorpan-1.jpg not found

So started hacking the floorpan of the Hilux and scratch building a bunch of other bits, kinda "bush" hacking as if it were done Waaaay out back without too much finess.

Attachment UndersideFloorpan-2.jpg not found

Added some mid-front chassis mounts too.

Attachment UndersideFloorpan-3.jpg not found

And strengthening side rails underfloor . . .

Attachment UndersideFloorpan-4.jpg not found

Front chassis mounting and Bumper/Crashbar strengthening too

Attachment BodyUndersideFrontstrengthening.jpg not found

Some rear chassis mounting points, more strengthening and detailing under the deck.

Attachment UndersideFloorpan-5.jpg not found

and finished the cab rollcage. Allowing the cement to harden before tidying that up...

Attachment CabCagedUp.jpg not found

I have also started to cut out the rear wheel arches which need to be opened up somewhat to allow those big feet some room. . .
And started constructing the rear Rollbars and such for the deck area.
Most of what I am doing I am inventing then figuring out as I get to it . . . :P

More to come.

Comments and critiques always welcome.

Again, My THANKS for the positive responses folks :)

There may not seem to be much progress here but I can tell you there is work happening on this build every day. Most of it is little things, which often take a lot of time for what is achieved. And then there is the staring at it to figure out what next to do and then how to do it kinda stuff too. :P

In building the cage inside the cab area I miscalculated in how much needed to come off the ends of the dash and took way too much off, so have rebuilt parts of the which will be seen. Little stuff.
I am playing with the idea of not having a bonnet, so have filled the firewall where there were two gaping holes for the primitive hinges on the hood. Little stuff.

Oh I know what you mean about working on nit, but not a huge amount of progress!! I've also done lots of little stuff, making some stowage, a wrapped up blanket etc... just filling the cab. Also rebuild some of the interior to suit some things... lots of little things.

Firewall looks good mate :) I know I wont be having my engine showing... too much work, on such a basic kit.

Hmmm, Client No-Show. Thankfully he is ok and has rescheduled.

So on with the little stuff . . .
I'm going to add some gauges to the dash, a four panel resin piece, which is simply a flat piece. So I have cut and added gauge backs to that and still need to make a mounting bracket for it. Little Stuff . . .

Attachment AddGaugespt1.jpg not found

Attachment AddGaugespt2.jpg not found

I decided to beef up the suspension to something approximating what might be seen on those big off-roader types. They often have a double set of shockies front and rear. Made little upper braces and added some to the front, although not exactly where they might go on the real thing, they look the part. I also added a PE nut to the top of the A Arm mount coz it looked a bit bare. Hard to see in the picture but they are there, and should pop when paint happens.

Attachment AddFrontShockies1.jpg not found

Rear mounts in process of being completed. Need two more yet. Little stuff . . .

Attachment RearShockMounts.jpg not found

Additional gas tank completed and mounted . . .

Attachment NewrearTankInstalled-1.jpg not found

Attachment NewrearTankInstalled-2.jpg not found

The insides of what should be door panels have no detailing whatsoever, so I have cut some shapes to represent door handles and added them for a little texture in there.

Attachment HandledOne.jpg not found

Because the rear suspension has been moved back in the chassis and the engine in here is not the original, the driveshafts where not long enough so I have made mods to fix that.

Attachment DrivetrainMods.jpg not found

So mostly a lot of little stuff going on . . .
And much more to come . . .
See yuh then team.
