HMM-268 aboard the USS New Orleans mid 2000's apparently, I used the recommended paint codes but I'm not convinced, maybe they'll tone down once I've finished weathering and matted it all down.

I know these are AH-1's but the colours are the same as you would usually see on the UH-1's... Just for reference, matey, hope it helps sort it out.

Not really I knew the green was off register now you've just highlighted it so it's back in the paintshop it goes.
Oh wait, I can't repaint cos there are decals on............

On 2nd thoughts it's not that far off, the green here, is the same.

And while its not easy, you can see that the green is the same here (maybe a bit darker which the washes will sort)

So it's not all doom and gloom and I'm not going to repaint.

No its Gunze which is normally pretty good for colour matching. I'm back at the bench now and it seems like it was mostly a trick off the light, the paint is H304 Olive Drab which according to sources is right. It's still not like the green in the pics Ian posted, maybe once I've finished it'll get lighter.

I used a Vallejo green acrylic wash that lightened the green while leaving the black as it was, added some smoke and dirt to muck up the lines and I'm happy with the colour now.
Just got the top and rear flappy spinney bits to do.

Almost done, but I have some quick questions:
Would the rotors have a yellow warning band on them like aircraft props?
Would there be any "remove before flight" type labels?
Where would the blade tie downs be if I wanted to make it look like the blades are tied down in situ?
Would the rocket pods be reused and therefore chipped etc?

Just some more weathering here and there, mostly chips and scratches, just got to work out where to put them, places like the skids, door edges, gun mounts etc.

Thanks for looking.

I'd definitely add the yellow tips on the rotor... if you look back to my Huey from a few months back, just copy the proportions from that.

RBF tags ? - Not sure.

Rotor Tie downs - from the tip of the skid and around the boom aft of the stabilisers.

Pods - maybe not chipped but smoke stained at the front end for sure.

Hth.

Here's some pics showing the rotor tiedowns. One is also very similar to the scheme you have done and one also shows intake blanks etc.

Thanks for the photos, didn't need to worry about the green after-all. That reminds me I should probably green tint the top windows.

That's looks awesome Gary, can't wait to see at armistice
As for the questions, seems they've been answered, tie downs can be anywhere really lol, but usually around the rear boom
Those photos show the rotor pulled down quite a bit which isn't necessary
Depends how u want it displayed
With tie downs and intake covers or without as if it's getting ready to start up

In the build:
3x 1/24 Subaru rally cars
1/35 AH-6J Little bird
1/48 AH-1W Cobra

Intake covers will at least hide the fact that it's a crap kit and there's stuff all inside the looming cavities, I feel a big tarp coming on to cover the gaping hole on engine behind the main rotor shaft.

Fast work and the paint is looking good.

As for the LAU pods, there is no right or wrong as they were loaded new, used, re-used - the rockets were the throw away item, the pods themselves were reloaded. Here are some images that should help. Note that the front and rear of the pod should be aluminium.

I put this down for a while and picked it up again last night. Using some air drying clay I rolled out a thin sheet and draped it over to look like a cover, basically I'm trying to cover the gaping hole that Dragon left in the top covers where the engine(s) should go.
First up is the bare clay "tarp", it's been in the dryer box so hardened in about 30 minutes instead of the usual 12 hours. It needs sanding and smoothing off before continuing.

Here it is again after priming and some sanding and general smoothing off.

Now it needs painting, I'll probably make it a medium grey like the primer colour unless that's way off and should be green or brown?
Thanks for looking.

Nice effect. I was thinking a cool dio/model build would be the Millennium Falcon from the Force Awakens with the tarps draped all over it and wondered how it could be done. Now I know ;)

First off, that tarp looks excellent. I'd have sworn you had used tissue or cloth if you hadn't said it was clay.

BUT, I'll play devils advocate.I think it detracts from the overall appeal of the model.Seems a little unusual having a tarp with the rear cabin doors wide open.

Is there really that big of a gap that it is needed? Could you not box in the area with some plastic card and then paint to match the rest of the area (or even just a dark grey/black)?

Yeah it's a huge hole that you can see right through, it detracts from the overall appearance more than the random tarp.
I thought about boxing it off but time is against me, I've just got too much to do for AiC and I wanted to get this done so I can enter the Helo build. This was the quickest solution and it doesn't even have to be a tarp from the helo, it was taken off the flight deck and just thrown up there while something else was being worked on.
I'd rather have something looking unusual that outright ugly :D
Besides the tarp isn't actually fixed to the helo it's just sculpted at present and sitting there. I'll revisit the boxing thing this weekend if I get time but tbh I probably won't have time to do it justice.

Onwards
I knocked up a base, painted some textured paint and made a rather nice stencil.
Proper photos to come, once I've worked out what colour this rotor is supposed to be and what it's made from.
