No objection from me, much like the scifi build I wont be starting for a couple of weeks anyway but if it helps us get more kits in the finished thread than im all for it.

Well I'd call that a consensus. Other things being equal, we can start cutting plastic at 0001hrs on the first of December and stop twelve months later.

Is there anybody who'd like to donate some sort of prize for the winner of the 'popular vote' at the end ?? - Something appropriate to the theme of the build would be good, and if that means a slightly battered copy of Top Gun or Final Countdown, then so be it !!. Contact me by PM if you'd like to preserve your anonymity.

I'd be happy with an early start as well - although the challenger will take priority until its finished

apart from the new kit I will be starting, I will hopefully be able to finish the one that I started last year some time (although I will put some pics up it wont be included in a final revel (provided there are no objections)

cheers

Shaun

HAH!! i knew one of you observant buggers would pick that, yep it can and much less stress than my F-4c to F-4j

from what ive read in the past the F-14D was a "cheapo"upgrade to the ageing F-14A as the costs for this were mounting,..but ended up being just as expensive,... i guess its like the A4 Lear Siegler Kahu upgrade, same/similar air frame but vastly upgraded avionics.

Das internet says
"Externally, the most obvious difference between the F-14D and the F-14A is the presence of the dual chin pod under the nose of the F-14D that contains both the Television Camera System (TCS) and the Infrared Search and Track (IRST)."

"The wing glove box leading edge extensions of the F-14D were slightly re-contoured to house antennae for the ALR-45, for the Itek ALR-67 radar-warning receiver and for an AN/ALQ-165 Airborne Self Protection Jammer (ASPJ). The ALR-67 incorporates both the traditional crystal-video pattern type of receiver used for radar warning, plus a superheterodyne receiver receiver controlled by a high-speed reprogrammable digital processor. "

The first F-14D's delivered were actually F-14A air frames, "The first production aircraft was rolled out on March 23, 1990. Grumman had hoped to deliver at least 12 "new-build" F-14Ds to the Navy every year through 1998, while also remanufacturing many of the earlier F-14As to F-14D standards. Only thirty-seven of the planned 127 new-build F-14Ds were completed"

I've got the Eagle Strike decals for these two schemes.

...Just haven't made up my mind which one I will do yet. Maybe the VF-14 bird.

Initially I wanted to do a really weathered AC, but these seemed to have been kept pretty clean.

I am thinking of doing a VF-1 build, but don't know if they flew the B or D version, and if they had a cool Low Vis scheme.

Don't know if it's "cool", but it's definitely a low vis 'A'!

So here it is:

It's an oldie but a goodie...Better build build this sucker, since I've had it since 1986....the original F-14A!

Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of making a 1/72 F-14D (Finemolds kit) but I only want to do a lo-vis scheme like the image attached. I'm not too fussed about squadron so long as it left a carrier deck armed to the teeth with GBU's. I've looked in the obvious places for aftermarket decals (Modelair, Acorn, Hobby City, HLJ, Hobbyeasy, LuckyModel, Hannants, Squadron,) and no one has got a single sheet. For such a popular aircraft I'm somewhat surprised to find nothing! Has anyone got any suggestions for retail outlets or manufacturers that stock something suitable?

Cheers,
T

VF-1 Wolfpack only operated A's they were disbanded in 1993 after their carrier was decommed (can't remember the name)

Incidentally for their debut they flew the last combat sorties in Vietnam as air cover for retreating troops in 1975! they are also heavily shown in Topgun as well as VF-111 and VF-51 (all the planes in the movie are from VF-51) I think mavericks last RIO in top gun was callsign "Sundown" and wore VF-111 patches as well as the Sundowners helmet, was maverick in VF-1??? i seem to remember a VF-1 patch on his leather jacket??

Your best bet is most likely CAM or Cutting Edge (long out of production), but would be best if you did a search and then saved it to your favourites to get notifications of new auctions on eBay.

On The Bench (2021)
Hasegawa 1/48 F-4J Phantom
Tamiya 1/48 Martlet IV conversion
Hasegawa 1/48 TAV-8B Harrier conversion
Trumpeter 1/32 A-10A Thunderbolt
Tamiya 1/32 F-14B Tomcat conversion
Hasegawa 1/72 F-104S Starfighter
Hasegawa 1/72 UH-60A Yanshuf conversion

Thanks Craig,
As it happens I had the good fortune to stumble onto some suitable decals from an old Revell kit for sale on ebay so snapped them up immediately. So I'm good to go, once they turn up that is.
Happy camper. :)

Does anyone have a decal sheet going spare from a 1/72 Hasegawa F-14A?

This is the state of my decal sheet from the kit. The years haven't been kind

Put it in a Glad zip lock bag and tape it to a window in the sun for a couple of days, it will turn all the colours back ;)
