Built to Race
Start Date 30/11/2015
End Date 28/04/2017
The Build is open to all current members of KiwiModeller.
Open to ANY Scale of Model using any medium and any method of construction from OOB to complete Scratchbuilt.
ONLY Vehicles of four or more wheels, (excluding motorcycles and motorcycle-like vehicles (i.e. Quads and trike types)).
Depict ONLY motorised vehicles specifically designed and/or built to compete in any class of sanctioned motor racing events from any era, including Land Speed Record attempts. This may include Post Showroom modifications.
If possible, include written and/or photographic documentation of the vehicle/s you are depicting. Yes, we are looking to depict ACTUAL vehicles that have or do exist.
Artistic Bases/Dioramas are acceptable.
The model/s must be built in entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the specific “Built to Race” group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues, and documentation if you have any, at the beginning of your thread. By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post a minimum of five pictures of the completed build in the GB’s completed builds thread.
There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is always welcome.
The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote. Voting will run for seven days from the 28th of April 2017, ending Midday on the 5th of May 2017. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.
Moderators for this GB are 1/35th Battalion (D1 – David) and one other person yet to offer their services.
Very cool choice K2.
I've a few Protar motorcycle kits in my stash but no cars so I'll be keen to see how it goes together.
Looking at the sprue colours you'd hardly even need to paint it.
Did you get decals? If not, then there's aftermarket ones around like these:
Thanks for that - I have been thinking this morning about the paint for it - Will need to try and find some Ferarri Red - Does anyone have any suggestions?
Well last night I was pulling bits and pieces off the sprues and getting the general shape of it... fit isn't great to be totally honest. There is going to be filler on this one, probably a fair whack of it to get some of the joins looking better. No pics today, but maybe tonight if I'm watching Daredevil again! Almost at the end of the firsts season...
I have 2 pots of a Mr Color red I bought for a Ferrari F12 I'll build. It's probably not the right colour, but you're welcome to one if you want. It's Lacquer btw so you will want some lacquer thinners
Thanks Powder - I'm going to go with some of the paint that K1 has I was looking at the X-7 last night, and looking at the pics of the real car it doesn't quite look the same - a bit bright... I could be wrong!
Nice ref pix Powder. Interesting how much of it isn't the usual woven carbon fibre. I guess that didn't come into vogue for a few years after.
The red is much more of a "standard" Italian red than the later cars, which were much brighter. I used Tamiya X7 for mine too, and was happy with the result.
Those 89/90 Ferraris were some of the nicest looking F1 cars ever in my opinion.
This was done in the one night - Nothing painted, just off the sprues, and dry fitting everything. Some very horrible seam lines to get rid off though... Going to take a bit of work and filler... but I'll get it right!
Ferrari/Italian Red is one of those 'controversial' colours that the anoraks/ anally retentive love to debate . I'll stop there before I get wound up .
From my perspective - looks like a Ferrari, must be a Ferrari .
From experience the Protar kits are a bit dodgy around the joints, but with a bit of time and care produce a quite respectable model (+ they're cheap ).
Enjoy the build and looking forward to the final rendition.
