This group build is to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. It will run from 10th of July to 31st of October, 2015, following the dates of the battle.

The build is open to any scale and any subject that played a role in the Battle of Britain. While the Battle of Britain is foremost remembered as an air battle, builds including figures (e.g. famous historical figures from the battle), vehicles and armour (e.g. AA guns) and dioramas (e.g. airfield dioramas) are eligible provided a documented link can be established.

The model must be built entirely within the build dates to qualify, and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post your sprues at the beginning of the thread! By the end of the group build (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the group build forum which will be organised shortly.

To discourage cynical entries the build is open only to those who have been members of KiwiModeller for two months at the start of the group build and with at least thirty posts in the forums. So lurkers, get posting now if you want to enter! I will also vet for cynical or “gaming” entries and vote rigging.

No entry fee will be charged, but this is a good opportunity to make a donation to the upkeep of KiwiModeller.

The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote. Voting will run for the week following the 1st of November, ending Midday the 8th of November. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Thanks for the vid. How long did it take you to pre-shade the whole thing?

Hey Extremer, I'd say about 2 hours to do the pre-shading. There's a few basics that can really help with airbrush control - be happy to chat if helpful.

I decided to go with the Otto Bertram White 7 subject. After viewing plenty of conflicting info about RLM65 / 76 etc I decided to order Mr Color colours for the job. But then I got impatient and just cooked up my own version with what I had. The so called experts can't agree on correct hues so I figure if I like it then it's good enough.
Next I'll splash the camo scheme RLM 71 and 02 on upper wings and fuselage.

Looking really good there PJNZ. I appreciate that video of your pre shading, I could really do with that level of technique. At first I wondered if you'd used some kind of ruler but on seeing that video I can see it was just simply a matter of skill ;)

Very nice PJNZ! Is there an extra benefit from taking the airbrush cap off the end? Very nice control you have, thanks for sharing :)

From what I have learned, not a lot in terms of how the paint and air mix, but it does give you immediate access to clean the tip when it gets clogged or gets a drip building up on it.

Cheers Guys
Jimmy taking the air cap off allows a few benefits
1. As Kane says, allows easy access to regularly clear tip dry with fingers (prevalent when releasing small amounts of paint at a time)
2. Better visibility of where paint will hit surface
3. And importantly, it seems to improve the Venturi effect (especially when working close to the surface)

Well I decided to lighten the Italeri RLM02 to a nicer shade IMO

Then concocted some RLM 71 to taste

Will camo main wings next...

Cheers Jimmy yeah working without air cap is worth a try to see if you like it - just have to be careful not to bang needle tip on surface etc :)

After applying the camo to upper fuse I thought the light blue seemed a bit too blue so I re-masked the camo and greyed it down a bit which I like better.

Have now masked wings ready for RLM 02. Never masked a model for painting before so I'm pretty surprised how time consuming it can be!

Woohoo Kiwimav! :)
So camo is now more or less done. if any plane guys could tell me about Highlighting or Post shading I'd appreciate opinions. it looks like it needs some variation in the camo colours eh?
Interesting to see the variation in the look of the blue in different lights too

Thank you guys. I'm aware I've got a bit to do before the deadline!

Prop time. I firstly painted the parts silver then sprayed a black green mix over top. Created some wear by revealing silver underneath. Then applied decals and a black oil wash over top.

(As an aside if anyone has a spare prop set I'd love to create little workshop vinniette with my unused engine)

As mentioned I've chose "White 7" as the subject airplane piloted by Major Otto “Otsch” Bertram (30/4/1916 – 8/2/1987). Interestingly the only images I can find are Bertram's White 1.

Bertram led 1./JG 2 during the opening phases of the Battle of Britain. He claimed seven Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters downed in five days between 2 September 1940 and 6 September. In total he shot down 22 enemy aircraft; 13 during WW2 and 9 during the earlier Spanish Civil War.
His two brothers also served in the Luftwaffe. Hans, Gruppenadjutant of I./JG 27, was shot down over England in September 1940, and Karl, a nightfighter pilot with 9./NJG 1, was killed when he crashed his Bf 110 west of Kiel following an engagement with a RAF bomber on 28 October. Otto, as the sole surviving brother, was hence excused from further combat duty and spent the remainder of the war in administrative posts or training units.
Bertram joined the Bundeswehr after the re militarisation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1956. He held various positions in the Bundeswehr including that of press officer. Promoted to Oberstleutnant he served as an military attaché in Belgium and Luxembourg.
Otto was a Taurus who enjoyed long walks on the beach, reading and quiet nights in.

Started adding some decals...

The emblem of the JG.2 Richthofen appears on both sides of the fuselage under the cockpit. Similarly the Staffel marking of a leashed dog ‘Bonzo’ appears on both sides, and was developed by Otto Bertram. The template for the marking was the comic character ‘Bonzo the Dog’, by Brit George Studdy who’s drawing paradoxically appeared on aircraft of both sides. An oddity of this aircraft's markings is that the swastika emblem covered both the rudder and fin. (Source: Eduard)
