Good start Gary :cheer: They have come out pretty sweet,I like the first of these two, maybe the second fella is older :cheer:
Drill out hands and I can see a seam
When you apply the oils and blending,is the base colour lifting?
I have had this a couple of times, the skin texture starts getting abit rough, not nice and smooth.
Anyway got around this by a coat of klear before the oil paints.
I found highlights work well with the field grey colour.
I use decals on plastic figures and paint the resin ones :)

I am in awe. The only thing I'm not sure about is the colour in the mouths. It looks like a darker version of the lip colour rather than a hole as it were. Says he who still can't even paint eyes. The wrap piping might be a little thick too, but it stands out nicely like stage make up does.

Ha! I've got a job making props - more specifically models so I've hauled this out and I've made some progress. Nothing like a schedule to get you moving like lightning!!

It's been great so far. I've downsized the dio to something which is manageable, and suited to my experience and skill level. Figures are at 1, or 2. But on towards my first dio base.

We see here a newby mistake. Thankfully it will be out of sight under the StuG!

I'm going to get more varied herbs for this.

I will also apply a grey to the wire. Silver wire? Nahh...

The Stug needs some tow cables and that may be that. One figure for sure, and perhaps another.

Cheers guys!

Thanks Glenn,

in the end it was - just get on with it! So I did.

Thanks Dave,

been along time between drinks for "Lutzow".

I've washed the ground work with some oxide red and dusted with pastels to lighten and change the tone more in keeping with the dust on the StuG. I think it's come out better for it but we'll see what you guys think. I post photos soon.

Cheers
Gary

Hi there,

I've dusted the base and added some barb to the wire. It's going well - better than I expected. Progress is steady as they say.

Thanks for visiting and any comments welcome

Cheers

Thanks Dave,

just a quick update on this.

Figures. You've seen them previously and now that I've cut the size and scope of the dio there are only 2 that survived the cut.

The first was more or less completed about 7/8 months ago. I've added a pair of binocs to his left hand, and given him some rose in his cheeks. He is 99% done.

The second is the sargeant. I base coated him about the same time and then began painting his uniform months later. The thing was that i used a different method and the figs looked like they were painted by 2 different people! Having sorted that out recently, I then went to paint the faces. On this dude it took about 4 goes, versus about ten for the first. I'm happy with how they have turned out....finally.

Should be a doozy getting this to stay on him!

Catch you around,

Cheers

Coupla test shots while I figure out the camera under some different lighting settings.

Still have to get some more stowage on, and do a general tidy up and set the second figure.

It's from the old Tam weapons set. Still have to find a belt for it.

Cheers
Gary

One trick I've read about for taking photos, if your camera has a manual white balance adjustment, is to take a picture of a plain white a4 piece of paper, use the white balance from that, and then take your other photos. Supposedly makes the lighting and colours look more natural and "how they should be". Never tried it myself cause my camera don't have manual white balance, but if yours does it might help.
Otherwise it's looking pretty good so far.

Any chance you could share a few pointers such as:
- Paints you used for the figures, enamels, oils or arylics?

Sorry for the ultra late reply Grant!

Paints for the figures.

Because these were the first I'd ever painted and also because there was such a gap inbetween them IIRC I used tamiya acrylics over a base coat of gray. It might have been valleyo - can't quite remember. I did get a bottle of acrylic paint retarder from an arts store because I was really interested in wet on wet blending. I used oils to further deepen the folds etc.

Colours for the flesh tones were I think burnt sienna for the base, follwed by blends of made up of titanium white and burnt umber etc. I'm sorry, but I think you'd find more accurate info by going into the blog itself and reading it - I just can't remember at the moment.

The ground work was pretty easy and simple. I didn't want to get bbogged down so I used polly filler as a the "dirt". To give me some mounds I used cut up card board - the same as you get from storage boxes. I glued some together to get different heights etc. It's surprising resilient. I then applied the pollyfilla using an old spoon.

The small rocks etc is crushed cat litter, which was pushed into the still wet pollyfilla. I set it by by brushing diluted PVA over it.

All in all pretty simple and hope that helps mate.

Cheers
Gary

EDIT: Page 59 has details of what colours etc I used and are more specific on the ground work mate!
