Thanks guys, it's been abit of a haul, but I'm very pleased to be here. It's the first time that I've used MIG dust (Russian earth), and the first time that I've used the chipping technique, particularly on an interior.

My rational for the unkempt interior is that this vehicle is a survivor of the Barbarossa Campaign, hence the chipping etc. From what I've read the StuG wasn't the most rain proof of vehicles either....The floor, like I said, could do with some varience in tone, so I'll lay down some light dust soon.

I've got a basic photo of the internal stowage for the gunners side of the hull (Spielberger), and it looks to me if there is a rack that holds up one of the water bottles. If anyone has an idea, then please pipe up! :) :)

Cheers,
G

Thanks Bish for the compliments! :)

Here's a photo that didn't make the cut of the scissors binocs....

Having a look at it I can see some areas where I just want to scale back alittle. It's going to be interesting the next week or so. I've drawing out a plan for the internal stowage I want to place (mostly little latches/belts), as well as adding some detail I missed previously (the most notable being the reinforcing plate at the rear end of the recoil guard). I'd also like to sculpt in some "ruffles" into the canvas spent shell bag. It's in shadow for sure, but I can't help feeling that there'd be some light reflected back from the open hatches.

Anyway, thanks again!

Update time, and we've been painting again but only small details. Basically I wanted to do the LHS internal stowage. I'd managed to find another photo of the area and so I cranked up some infantry gear from the spare parts box. I need to get some better stuff but it turned out ok, and like usual you wont get to see the nitty gritty of it....

I'm not sure if I want the Kar98 in there, but it was a good excuse just to see if I had the technique to actually attempt it - I'm pleased with it. The stick grenades, mess tins and water bottles were ho-hum, in detail and in painting.

I had another go at making buckles and belts from fuse wire and tape - those things holding the gas masks. And the scissors binocs had a belt/buckle thing that looped around them when they were stowed. They came out okay I think. It means that I'll go back and redo the belt/buckle that retains the jack block....

Cheers fullas :cheer: B)

Thanks again guys, I'm flattered by your kind sentiments. :)

Tony, I see your models as an ideal on tonal variety and depth. You've got that subtle light play and weathering thing down to a "T" man!! :cheer:

Hi Dave, your wife was right! One thing I've learned on this build is that if I go step by step, little by little then the end result will be good. If I try and hit the ball out of the park in one go sometimes good, sometimes bad. As for the slings, go for it!! The more you practise the better you get as you know.

I was just thinking about making a sling for the Kar98 last night. I thought, 'nah...you've got to be mad..." Might try today if I have the time! :cheer:

Yeah I've been introduced to a super paint stripping method and I'm just waiting to get some more chemicals to make up another batch of stripper. It's half stripped, basically it's had a primer, a black enamel and a silver coat but I didn't like it, the stripper is eating through all 3 coats in a single pass but it's very smelly even with a mask and so I do it outside.

I really like the mixture of red and dark/ German grey for the chipping. It almost looks like its rusting. The whole thing is very convincing, top stuff.

Thanks man! :)

I didn't use German grey for the chips though. That's the Gunze steel (quite dark) and Games workshop chainmail. I fired a semi gloss clear over the top for protection because next up was an oil wash to tie everything together. That darkened the overall finish, let alone the chipping, considerably, but gave it a nice tone.

I then went back and over some of the heavy wear patches with some tiny touches of chainmail and humbrol silver enamel.

That Chain mail is my friend. I now do all the bare metal on tracks and so forth with it as a base. Just the right subdued colour.

Couple of mile stones passed the other day. I actually put in the last of the vehicle internal fixtures and sealed the lower hull to the roof. I'm going to add some weapons and some battle bowlers and call it finally a day for the interior sometime next week everything going well. And I attached the track guards to the hull as well. Anyway....

I was feeling sorry for myself when an old idea came up.

I was going to leave it smashed out but in the end I thought it'd look cooler complete. Then you get all that weird refraction. The rest of the time I've been building the spare track holders on the front, and finally completing all the little bits that make up the front mudguards. Major pain, but I'm pleased with how they turned out.

The bracket that runs along where the track guard and the transmission roof meets was a lucky find as it hides the small gap between the track guard and the front end of the StuG. I thought I was pretty accurate, but just out a fraction. :dunno:

And, those little pieces of plastic between the brass triangle and head lamps are my best recent buy. .15 plastic sheet. It's great and meant I didn't have to go to the brass sheet!! :cheer:

These hooks weren't nearly as fiddly as I though they would be - but the thought of making a similar pair for the rear makes me blanche at the moment....

Oh crud. I've got to add some latches onto the mudguard....

Thanks guys!

Yes Andrew, really looking forward to getting the exterior paint started. It's a bit of a bother, what with the weather at the moment but we'll pick it up soon, I'm sure. In the mean time it's;

Chains to retain the tow pins - tow cables
weld along the front of the casement when I eventually attach it to hull
rework the belt and buckle that retains the jack block
attach the small lights/horns etc to the fender, make some leads

Go down to see me mate, and get a set of Ferrodo brake pads fitted to the front...we'll head off to Pickapart and see if they've got some old 1941/2 P11 Alkett StuGs in the yard .I've got a WOF coming up don't you know Gary :) :cheer:

And I'll paint the tools separate and add them to the thing after I've laid down the base.

Bish, the pins for the tow brackets are best left on the sprue on my kit. I'll recycle them into something else one day (eg. that ball mount mg34 I used for the lamp is from the very old Tamiya Panther). Plus you only get 2!! So I had to make them anyway!!

Got to get moving. Cheers fella's :)

Just a small update today. Just been doing some small details again. It's all alittle bit of a bother. Am I doing this to delay the painting? Is this the project that never gets finished? Am I addicted to StuGs in general now? Hmmm....

Fun with fuse wire part 4. (and I drilled out the side lamps as well).

I had a major rethink concerning the stowage. Really bothered by the fact that the drum I had lined up for the back looked like old rubbish, so I thought I'd try and rustle up something of my own.

I made the individual planks and scored the grain on with some coarse sandpaper. I really wanted a battered look so everything is not perfect or straight - the extremes in temp and different expansion and contraction rates of the wood. This has also prompted the crew to make their own repairs.

The fancy latch was/is supposed to suggest that this was a civilian item before being press-ganged into Heer service. I've got some solid ideas on how I want to paint this but we'll see. B)
