That really does look pretty good there, very subtle streaking

Here's what it looks like with the second layer of grime. Might add a couple of black streaks and call the undersides done.

I think so, just to add slight variation. It is VERY convincing.

Maybe not straight black - too harsh - perhaps a dark dirty grey. Just a thought....

That's the one Ian. I was thinking of maybe using some Paynes grey oil or one of the grey AK washes I've got.

Yep Paynes Grey with some Raw Umber mixed-in. Thats exactly what I'd go with.

Couldn't find my Paynes grey oil, just a watercolour tube, so I used some AK dark grey and raw umber. Also added grime to the undercarriage doors and speed brakes.

Calling the undersides done now.

Thanks again guys!

I'd be happy to put a tutorial-type thing together to show how I achieved these results. Might take me a little while to piece something together. Maybe a youtube clip?

First layer of weathering on the top sides. Used the oil dot technique with a dark grey. The following isn't a tutorial, just showing the finished result.

Started with the port wing

Completed layer

Comparison between weathered port wing and unweathered starboard wing

Starboard wing before

Oil dots applied

Completed starboard wing

A layer of Future once this has dried and then I'll add another subtle layer of weathering to finish it.

Have now applied a coat of Alclad semi-sheen to the entire airframe.

How come it isn't until you're applying the clear coats that you notice how many pieces of dust, hair and other debris are on your kit??!! Grrr! This was even after brushing it down. Will need to do some minor polishing with the Micro Mesh before applying a final coat.

Looking really good.

So my understanding is that it's oil paint diluted with (?? White turps or something), and then once you are streaking it, you're using a cotton bud or something with the thinners also?

Do you put a protective layer of something down before doing this weathering technique?

The first couple of layers on the underside were AK Interactive enamel washes and the first layers on the upper surfaces were oil paint diluted with white spirits (same mixture I used for the panel lines). But I applied the oil dots with oil neat, although you could dilute it a little if you liked. For the streaking I used a wide flat brush moistened in white spirits with the excess removed with a paper towel. I also use a cotton bud to modify the streaks or blend them/remove them in some areas too.

Yep, I put a couple of layers of Future on before I do any weathering and between layers of weathering so I don't make a mess of the previous layers.

It's where I get mine from, plus using White Spirits helps the drying process more than standard oil thinners like distilled etc.
