× The Air Force act was passed on April 1, 1937 officially heralding the birth of the RNZAF from the remains of the NZPAF. To mark the 80th Anniversary nect year, this group build will cover any subject that was used by the RNZAF (including Army and Navy aviation in NZ), and will run for 1 year; 6 months either side of the anniversary date.

The build is open to any scale and any subject involved in the formation and history of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. If you are unsure, the definitive list can be found on Wikipedia, but will also be posted in a separate thread under the GB forum. Note, no what-ifs or aircraft in colours they wore prior to service. Must be in actual markings used while in service.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_o...yal_New_Zealand_Navy

As with other GBs, The model must be built in its entirety within the above dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in this group build forum documenting regular progress.
Please post images of your kit and its contents (including proof of start date) at the beginning of your thread. Partially started kits that have not had much major assembly may be allowed at the discretion of the GB moderators. If in doubt, just ask.
There is not going to be a requirement for people to build different subjects. If it's on the list and you want to build it, then have at it.

By the end of the GB participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread.
There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome
The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote, but there will also be a judged category at the Armistice in Cambridge in Nov 2017
Voting will run for the week following the 1st of November 2017, ending Midday the 8th of November 2017. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Probably not as quick as the Vampire because of the camo, but probably knock it out quickly once I start.

Detail on the kit looks very fine. I guess I'll find out about the fit soon.

This is a very interesting kit. It feels very short-run and coming to this directly from the Airfix Mustang is an interesting comparison. The fit is okay, but the file and sanding sponge are getting a real workout. The plastic is very nice to work with and the surface detail is very refined. The parts are not numbered on the sprue, and I think the instructions are wrong on a couple of occasions. Also, the instructions shows a level of detail that does not exist on the kit itself. Definitely a kit for modelers rather than assemblers. But most importantly, this is a fun kit and I think it will look pretty good in the end.

Paint maybe this weekend as I'm still putting this together. The instructions are very vague and there are few locating holes so it requires lots of looking at reference pics. How the front undercarriage is meant to fit together (and stay together) is a bit of a mystery.

That landing gear looks prototypical and is ever so short. Makes me wonder how many tail strikes this aircraft endured?!

Call it a 'Tailstrikeometer' - the shorter the rail, the worse the strike was. :)

I'm assuming that is some kind of aerial. Or maybe something to hang the washing/spare flight suits on. I'm sure someone will know.

Scratched a few details and then primed it with Tamiya Sky Grey. Quite a nice looking little kit under paint I reckon.

Canopy masked and first colour on. It's a mix of Tamiya acrylic Desert Yellow and Flat Earth.

It's getting a bit chilly in the garage.

Looking good Grant.

Quick fix - remove the lump above the landing/taxi light window on the nose (the area isn't tan, so you should be able to paint over easily). Don't know what it is supposed to represent, but the Strikemaster in RNZAF service never had a lump like that there. That panel was like a car hood and had the oxygen bottles and some avionics inside - spent many years under that panel for various reasons. Main one was changing/refilling oxygen bottles.

The "towel rail" antenna was the ADF sense antenna (Automatic Direction Finder).

I was going to mask this and then thought that freehanding the camo would be good practice. The demarcation isn't really fine enough, but it will do.

Painted the underside and touched up the camo colours. It was a bit like, the dark green is good, but the tan needs touching up, ahh the light green needs touching up, oopss the dark green needs attention again... :S Got there eventually. I would mask this kit next time.

Scary hand for scale!
