Pacific GB: Hasegawa 1/48 UH-3H Sea King was created by Craig Sargent
This ain't your daddy's PTO. My WW2 subject interest is a little limited, hence the need to find something a little more modern in the Pacific region stipulated to play with. Have a number of Hasegawa 1/72 HSL-51 (now HSM-51) H-60s in the to do pile, but the release of the Hobby Boss kits meant they had many more advantages in a build over the Hasegawa kit.

I have my entry down to one of two options (if there is time, I may throw some more pennies in the hat and try for the second)

1. HSL-51's ComSeventhFlt VIP bird. The Hobby Boss SH-60F kit has everything needed including the long rang tanks (except decals which will be a custom job - the white cheat lines will be fun to mask and paint!).

The model

Which will in turn become this

2. HSL-51's original colour bird scheme using decals from the Hasegawa kit on the Hobby Boss SH-60B.

The model

Which in turn will become this

Will decide closer to the start line, but welcome any thoughts on a preference

I should probably add, that the reason I picked this subject is HSL/HSM-51 were deployed and active providing disaster relief and supply drops following the Sendai/Fukeshima earthquake, and again during 2011 deployed numerous times to the Yellow Sea (part of the Pacific Ocean) during the Korean Peninsula stand-of

OMG! Craig isn't building a Hasegawa kit!?!?! LOL, just jokes :P . Should be good to see some more hobbyboss kits being built, for all the bad rap they seem to get, I have several in various stages of construction and so far haven't had a single bad thing to say about them. I've got the Italeri 1/48 Seahawk I got off Taylor a while back so it will be interesting to see what the detail on these is like compared to the Italeri (which has not a lot!).

If you take along a print out of our site logo and promote the site while at Model-X I'll waive the start date (make it Saturday) and make an exception for Model-X pariticipants if you want ;)

Well I have picked my initial build and with some time on my hands today, got the decals sorted. I have drawn the artwork and printed these out.

The white pin stripes will be masked and painted and the for the rest of the decals, will use some leftovers from the Hasegawa kit.

Ok - the pre-start pics first up

Box top

Contents (plus a little resin from the spares box) with "unused" parts already removed.

Sprues

Interior floor here is not actually used - just missed removing it - see pic above for correct floor piece to use

Decals - some of the stencils will be used in conjunction with the custom printed ones

Some resin pylons left over from a Hasegawa kit which are better than the Hobby Boss ones

This is going to be a change in what I intended - Hasegawa 1/48 UH-3H Seaking 'HSL-51 VIP'. Same squadron, same VIP bird, just slightly different scale, aircraft and era.

This arrived courtesy of a Japanese retailer (took a long time to track this down as it is long OOP). Comes with some nice white metal and resin bits to build the aircraft depicted on the cover. In my enthusiasm, I forgot to take a pic before some preliminary work was done. Have removed unneeded parts from the box, glued the interior bulkheads to the floor, cut out the window on the side of the fuselage for the new large resin piece, opened up the holes indicated and removed the areas indicated to allow the VIP aircraft to be built.

Looks very cool. Damn I'm envious of people who can print their own decals including white. I have yet to learn all about decal production.
This build will be most interesting.

Still here, still participating, just not as much as per usual.

Have made progress, but have not got any pics yet. Been a mad time of late, having been made redundant unexpectedly and then having to find new employment. Things are settling down again, but the new job has my bench time at a premium now, after family time.

I have added all of the Big-Ed interior, filled the extraneous windows in the fuselage with TLCP, added all of the fuselage windows including the big clear resin one, removed the crew door and assembled the Big-Ed replacement parts, and started on the rotor head. Need to look at getting some paint on the interior now so I can close it up. Will try and get some pics uploaded later this week of progress.
