Operation Desert Storm 25th Anniversary

January 17th 2016 will mark 25 years since the US-led Coalition began airstrikes in a prelude to boots on the ground to force the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait. To mark the 25th Anniversary, we will be commencing a Kiwimodeller Group Build, beginning January 17th 2016, and finishing on the 15th of July 2016.
The build is open to any scale and any subject that played a role in Operation Desert Storm. This includes Iraqi forces. The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 15th of July, ending Midday the 22nd of July. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

While my Mad Max build is on hold until I get the finishing products, I thought I would do a ship, albeit small scale, still a great ship. This should be good, a quick build. Planning on building it with the hull on, so no water dio.

Late entry, should be able to get this one done rather quickly. I have got a wooden deck set for this one, which comes with a small amount of PE - Might also get some rails for it yet... will see. Otherwise it will be all OOB.

Pics, boxart, sprues and proof of start date :)

Very nice K2!! I'll be watching this one.

I've been fortunate enough to visit the USS Iowa in Los Angeles a couple times now.
You know they are big... but you can't appreciate just how big they are until you actually get aboard.
I'd like to visit her sister ships as well some day.

The Iowa was the 1st of 5? if I recall correctly and was President Roosevelt's personal ship when he travelled abroad.
It even had a bath tub installed in his personal suite which was unique to the rest of the ships in the class.
Missouri probably gets more recognition because the Japanese surrender was signed on its decks.

I've got heaps of pictures and video if your interested.

Nice!! Yeah Missouri is quite famous, with the Jap surrender, also still going strong during the ODS, and also starring in a movie (Battleship - A lot of people mock the movie, but I quite enjoyed it :P )

I'll pm you my email address cheers

Nice model. I did the 1/700 New Jersey 1983 version. When she was providing fire support for us in the Root.

Straight OOB. The deck seam was a bear. And the decals fell apart. First and last 700 scale model I've built.

How thick is the wood deck? I've used them in 1/350 and had to move hatches and bulkhead equipment higher because of the thickness. They must be paper thin for 1/700.

P/E on 1/700 is insane. With these old eyes 1/350 P/E required an optivisor and reading glasses. I cannot imagine doing it in 700 scale.

Thanks dude. The deck set is paper thin, I can see through it while holding it up to the light, so should be good. I haven't tried sitting it on the deck yet, don't want to damage it being so fragile...

I don't think i'm going to go with the rails for the ship... Think it will just be as is, with the deck set :)

I've had a few late nights giving this a go, but being distracted by movies and TV programs lol... but it's quite nice to be building just OOB. Only thing I forgot about these ships in this scale... is the tiny pieces!! I' surprised I haven't lost any of them to the carpet monster.. and I have dropped a few! I have decided that I am not going to get railings for this - I know it would really make it pop, and be great, but I think it will be too small, and very frustrating haha. Though, I am going to give my hand at using stretched sprue to make the rigging :P

I have progressed more than these pics show currently, but thought I would put something up. Drilled out the ends of the barrels to give them a bit of a hollow look, and started building some structure. I have built a bit more of it.. but it is taking me a while as the pieces are quite small, very fragile, and do require a bit of clean up, which takes a bit of time, and very careful hands.

Nice K2. Do you have to sand the deck back and remove any detail before putting that decking over it, or is it more like a decal?

To be honest, I'm not too sure, and will find out when I get to attempting to fit it. It's more like very very thin balsa wood, not a decal :) I know I will have to keep all the bits that are raised up... but I will be grinding/cutting away the chain mould, as I have one to go over top. It's going to be interesting when I get to that part.

Little more progress on the build. I have heard the weathering stuff for the Mad Max build wont be coming for another week at the earliest, so hopefully will have this one close to finishing by then.

So have decided, I will be building it with the hull (It's not going to match my other 1/700 ships, as they're all water line), just to do something a little different, will not be building with rails - but will be giving it a go with rigging with stretched sprue. Wish me luck haha.

Nice progress K2. While not a big build, she's not a small ship either. Must look like a behemoth next to your other 1:700 ships

Actually, I have the Tirpitz and Yamato, and they're all about the same size... The Graf Spee is very tiny compared to it, and then the Jap subs are also very small compared. But overall, she's not too much bigger than the other battleships of the time (according to my models lol).

I'll ask the wife to take some comparison shots, watch this space :)

Cool build B)

Does the kit give you the option to build it waterline as well?

Yeah it does give me the option, but I was thinking of putting it with the hull on for this model. Planning on bringing this up to Cambridge this year, along with the other builds I have done this year :)

No pics, but construction is done, so will be getting on to some painting tonight I think. Might be done really quick!

Funny you should say that about the decking... The bloody A/M deck set I got for this does not include the rear part! I'm going to have to figure something out, but man it's frustrating, as the front sections, and parts of the tower will be all nice, with finely detailed wooden decking, and the rear will be different... I don't think I'll be able to replicate the effect with paints... Also don't really want to buy a whole new deck set for it... just for one panel...

Check your deck fret again. May have overlooked it. The only part of the aft deck that was still unpainted wood on Missouri was between the 40mm tubs.

I noticed the side art on your box that shows way more. Its the wrong ship. That was the aft deck layout of the USS Iowa. All 4 ships were different after their 90s commissioning. Non skid pattern was left up to the Commanders discretion.

Here is what the Missouri looked like in 1991

In this case as illustrated it would be correct. Unfortunately the plastic deck has wood decking moulded into it... So might have to work on filling that, and making it "smooth" for steel decking.

Thanks for that pic!

Found this pic... Most of the shots (including one I thought was the Missouri, but wasn't) aren't actually the Missouri, but other IOWA class battleships.

I would have gone for the wooden deck if I had not have sene your post.

No problem. Glad to help.

The non skid area was painted on over the wood deck. Only the helo pad area was steel. No need to make it smooth.
(edit)
Even the heo deck on the 83 NJ had wood decking moulded in. I did fill that
