Operation Desert Storm 25th Anniversary

January 17th 2016 will mark 25 years since the US-led Coalition began airstrikes in a prelude to boots on the ground to force the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait. To mark the 25th Anniversary, we will be commencing a Kiwimodeller Group Build, beginning January 17th 2016, and finishing on the 15th of July 2016.
The build is open to any scale and any subject that played a role in Operation Desert Storm. This includes Iraqi forces. The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 15th of July, ending Midday the 22nd of July. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

My modelling budget is spiralling out of control a bit with desired purchases for GBs, so have had to pull the reigns in a little bit. I was going to go with the Tamiya M1A1, but with AM costs likely to exceed two or three times what I was going to outlay for the original kit. I then looked at Tamiya's 1/35 M2A2 Bradley, but after reading several reviews, I couldn't be bothered putting in the required effort to make it correct :pinch:

I've since decided to go with Tamiya's 1/35 M1025 HUMVEE :woohoo:

Looking at maybe replacing the kit Ma Deuce or Mk 19 with Live Resin item, but that will most likely be it.

Hoping to order the kit in the next week or so

I couldn't help myself!

Into it!! :woohoo:

Step 1 Drive unit assembly

Step 2 Attaching lower arms

Step 3 Attaching Transfer case

Step 4 Attaching drive units

I'll work on the M1025 during the day, once my son is asleep and the chores are done, then into the T-55A in the evening. Won't be much progress on the T-55 tonight as me and the mrs are off to the movies B)

Update time.

This is photo progress from yesterday afternoon, and half an hour or so earlier today. Was going to do an update post last night, but got distracted watching the Blues win over the Highlanders :woohoo:

Here we go B)

Step 5 Assembling chassis parts

Step 6 Attaching dampers

Step 7 Attaching equipment

Step 8 Attaching tow hook

Step 9 Wheel assembly

I've decided to lump out for resin wheels for this build. Panzerart make a set for a reasonable price. Just need to sort the lowest price plus shipping from a supplier. I've seen to many horror stories online of vinyl wheels perishing and splitting over time, and also have had personal experience with my BRDM-3

Step 10 Attaching wheels

Waiting for resin wheels, but attached other parts

Chassis assembly complete

Step 11 Lower cabin processing.

Drilled out several 1mm holes and filled knock out marks with Mr Dissolved Putty and left to set overnight

Putty sanded back

That is where is currently sits. Was hoping to make a start on the interior, but don't think I'll be able to until Monday. SWMBO wants to have couch time with me tonight, and tomorrow I have my nephews birthday parties to attend.

Looks like a nicely detailed kit if the chassis is anything to go by and good job on filling the ejector pin marks, as being on the underside would be easy to ignore.
I still don't yet have one of these in the stash, but after looking at this come together and K2's a while back... may have to reconsider. B)

Thanks guys B)

Tempted to get a few more HUMVEEs, I might do a few kitbash conversions and get a couple of the newer Bronco kits.

Update time. This has been progress over the past few days. Has been a bit of stuttered building lately :pinch:

Step 12 Assembling seats

Step 13 Front window assembly

I'm leaving the windows out for now and will fit once I have painted the interior

Step 14 Attaching interior equipment

Step 15 Attaching front window

Step 16 Attaching interior equipment 2

That is where it currently sits. I'm waiting on some info from a friend in regards to what stowage to fit to the rear. I've also decided I'm going to replace the kit Mk. 19 with a Live Resin item. The kit one doesn't really cut the mustard

Hope to get more progress some tonight. After seeing the I have about 100 less days to finish this build, the T-55 has gone on the next to do list

The Mr Dissolved Putty works OK, though I think my jar might be getting past its best before. Tempted to get another jar

Not going to worry about detailing the radio Tony

Update time. Getting close to having the interior ready to paint, then can seal it up to paint the outside. I've found the cheapest supplier for some resin wheels, just need to sort some funds. I've decided against the Live Resin Mk. 19, in some slightly drunken madness late last night, I took to the kit barrel with a 0.8mm drill bit and hollowed the barrel out :woohoo: I'm pretty stoked with how it turned out

Progress pics

Step 17 Assembling weapons When I did this step I wasn't intending to use the kit weapons. I only assembled the tripod at this stage. Tamiya give you the option of mounting a .50cal Ma Deuce or the Mk. 19 40mm grenade launcher

Step 18 Assembling figures - Not using the kit figures

Step 19 Assembling doors As previously mentioned, I'm leaving the glazing out until I have painted the interior

Step 20 Attaching doors

Step 21 Assembling body parts leaving assembling turn signals until a little further on. Long type muffler not fitted to ODS version

Step 22 Attaching body I drilled out the opening a little more on the kit exhaust to give it a little more depth

Here is the reworked kit Mk. 19 I forgot to take a before pic of the barrel

Next step is working on the hood. I've attached some chrome silver sticker from one of my daughters sticker sheets to represent the reflective part of the headlight. reasonably happy with how it looks

Not sure how much I'll get done tonight, Super Rugby on tonight, Blues v Crusaders. Go the Blues!! :woohoo:

The Blues went as well as the Warriors  Sack Cappy and bring Cleary back!

Haha yeah, sometimes I will use whatever tool is close by if it suits the purpose! :woohoo:

Have slowed a bit, due to finding a great reference site on the HMMWV/HUMVEE. See it HERE I'm doing a little more investigation in regards to stowage.

One more stage completed. Down to the last 3 steps now.

Step 23 Engine hood assembly

Just need to finish the roof assembly (hopefully tonight) then it will be ready for a spray of primer

Update time

Construction is pretty much finished. Completed the last three steps. Just need to finalize stowage, and then get some paint on the interior so I can close it up to paint the exterior. Will most likely order the wheels at the end of next week.

Pics B)

Step 24 Roof assembly. You can build it with the hatch open. I opted for closed

Step 25 Attaching roof I haven't glued the roof down as I need to paint the interior

Step 26 Adding mirrors

I assembled the kit wheels to get see how it sits at ride height. Can't wait to do away with the ugly vinyl wheels

Here is how it looks ready for paint

So with the painting mojo back, and the end date for this GB getting closer, I pulled this out to prime the interior :cheer:

Hoping to get the interior painted at the same time as the T-55. Luckily they are the same colour!
