Operation Desert Storm 25th Anniversary

January 17th 2016 will mark 25 years since the US-led Coalition began airstrikes in a prelude to boots on the ground to force the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait. To mark the 25th Anniversary, we will be commencing a Kiwimodeller Group Build, beginning January 17th 2016, and finishing on the 15th of July 2016.
The build is open to any scale and any subject that played a role in Operation Desert Storm. This includes Iraqi forces. The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 15th of July, ending Midday the 22nd of July. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Just thinking about this for the upcoming build. I'll be wanting to use acrylic, so what is there? What can be easily mixed? Mix proportions? Variations? Discuss. B)

I was looking into this last month and am still deciding between these two Vallejo acrylics for my Tornado if/when I make a start on it.

Going by the colour charts (which generally isn't a good idea I know) the U.S Desert Sand appears to be a little too dark/brown and the Pale Flesh perhaps a tad too light.
Perhaps a 50/50 mix together?

This is from Flory's site from one the the guys who built a 1/48 Tornando theoretiacally based in Saudi Arabia. Here's what he used for his Desert Scheme.
Thought it might help

June 13 Juan 's Fantastic Tornado GR1

Flory's "Desert Storm GB". This is the 1/48 Italeri Tornado IDS.
First of all, this was mainly an OOB build with a few minor additions of aftermarket stuff.
Things used:
- Italeri kit (of course)
- Paints: -Vallejo Model Air Sand 075
-Vallejo Model Air Tan 079
-Vallejo Model Air Black
-Vallejo Model Air White
-Tamiya Sky Gray X-19
-Alclad Duralluminum
-Alclad Stainless Steel.
-PM Dark wash

Yeah, perhaps just a smidgen more sand in the bottom one. Looking at pics on the net the variation in the colour seems pretty wide. I understand that the lighting and camera can affect this, but I wonder just how much uniformity there was in the colour anyway.

For what it's worth, Humbrol do it in their enamel range (250), but not in their acrylic as far as I can tell.

Desert Pink is/was FS30279, and available from Humbrol (250 Matt Desert
Sand) or Xtracolor (X32 Desert Pink Gulf 10279).

The colour equivalence charts at IPMS Sweden also give Poly S (PCA826) and
Gunze Sangyo (H346? ).

I'm one of the rare lucky buggers who still has some Poly S Desert Sand PCA826 which is definitely Pinkish and an acrylic. I believe the Humbrol equiv is an enamel (it is) but you could always check out the Gunze one . . . google is your friend :P

And here you can download the complete Humbrol Colour Charts: www.humbrol.com/us-en/humbrol-wallchart
From looking at their colours I'd say you will need to mix something to suit but that shouldn't be too onerous . . . Acrylic colour AB0225 Middle Stone with a few drops of ABoo81 Flesh should do it. Of course there are many other alternative manufacturers who may have what you're looking for . . . e.g. Mig, AK, Life colour, Vallejo etc . . .

Good luck

David

Just to add a bit of info, looking through the Kitty Hawk Jaguar manual, they say the desert scheme is 85% C112 and 15% C39 from the Mr Color Solvent based acrylic line.

I've still got a couple of tins of the Xtracolor enamel which I plan to use for my Jag as it is a spot on match.

C112 has no Gunze aqueous equivalent and C39 is H79.

FWIW, the real colour used in the Gulf was 3 equal parts mix of red, white and yellow, so you might want to have a play mixing colours. Don't ask me what shades of red and yellow though.

Thanks Craig, that is welcome news. Only problem is there is no way the wife will let me start replacing all the paints I currently have with new ones. I'll just have to do it a couple of jars at a time. Do you also know if they will be getting mr levelling thinner in too? They would sell a packet if they could...

I think they already stock Mr Levelling thinner. They had a couple of 400ml bottles in the shop a the weekend when I visited and I think it was the levelling variety.

Craig, when you say Mr Hobby do you mean most of their product range, and in particular Mr Color paints?

I think Terry meant the lacquer range, which is Mr Color.

Far too yellow. Needs more red. Should be more like this (I realise monitor RGB colours are not consistent or the most accurate, but this is closer).

Best colour matches I have seen are the Xtracolor and Humbrol enamels.

Hasegawa's recommendation on their Desert Storm/Op Granby Tornado boxing is a Gunze Acqueous mix of 95% H44 Flesh + 5% H47 Red Brown. Haven't tried it myself, but their colour matches are usually ball park.

I built a Desert storm Buccaneer a long time ago and trying to get a good match for the colour took a bit of heartache.

The recommended paint, Humbrol paint Desert Pink (250) was way to pink, even lighted up. perhaps that was how they looked straight from the paint shop but none of Gulf War aircraft (of any type) looked pink in any of the pictures I had seen (and I looked at a lot) In the end I used a mixture of Humbrol Satin Ok (71) with a drop of red and D some Desert Sand (63).

The only "pinkish" aircraft imges I saw were ones repainted back in the UK for museums. I'd go with what you're eye says when you look at images of the particular aircraft you want to build.

not to hijack the thread but here's the Buccaneer I built.
