I will be building (and I expect heavily modifying) Emhar's elderly 1/35 scale MK IV Kit. I considered buying the new Tamiya Kit but the Emhar offers a challenge, and had the notable advantage of already being in my cupboard!

Accompanying her on a diorama will be Tamiya's new british WW1 Infantry, again much modified, and a lot of scratchbuilt stuff.

To begin, I have started looking at the sponsons.

There is some nice detail, but a huge flaw is evident.. the rivets on the front face are long ovals, due to bad mould design. I have begun reshaping them to be round as you can see on the upper side of the sponson to the right in this image. Im doing this by hand which may yet be a mistake..

Further work on the sponson.. finished hacking at rivets and put together the basic frame of the first one which fits okay with a little tender ministration (hit it and clamped it).

Looking at this lewis gun. The kit part is just unthinkably horrible.. I've started modifying it as you can see here, but Im not so far sure it is saveable. It needs a longer muzzle cowl and some details, and some cutting into the ball-mount. Ill do my best with it (which may involve a brass tube for the cowl) but I am so very tempted to use the guns from the tamiya infantry kit which are the right kinds and very nicely made!

Only problem with that is there are only two and I need 3, and if I use them then no machine guns for the infantry.

Seriously? Wow that would be amazing. Are you replacing them with hotchkiss or something?

Putting aside my aborted attempts to fabricate new lewis guns in anticipation of maartens generosity, I decided to have a look at the cannon barrels. They are far far off round but well sized and tapered, so I did some emergency surgey to round them, filled up and rebored the holes to be central.. actually look pretty decent. A tiny bit undersized in fact but not far off. The gun shield assembly is hideous but after a bit of filler on the shield, only that and the barrel are visible anyway.

Also drilled/cut out the vision slots, and that is essentially a sponson done.. may revisit some details later

Courtesy of Maarten, I received the machine guns. Drilling out and modifying the ball mounts was a bit.. sketchy. Looks okay in the end I think. a lot better than the kit parts that is for certain!

Lots of subassemblies built up. I will be adding quite a few details to this stuff once together I think, but I intend to build it all up minus tracks then look at adds. Im not changing the basic structure, this is meant to be a reasonable build (hah as if)

Work on detailing.. added individual rivets (!) to the top box, front hook thing also. Want to finish hull details before adding the rails as they will get in the way I think.

This is terrific. Going great guns, you might say, and lots of them ... Guns poking out everywhere!
I'm a regular fan of this thread.
Can't wait to see the progression through infantry into diorama.

Thanks!

I'm pushing the boundaries a bit on this one.. complete parts fabrication from brass sheet and plastic. Individual rivet details. Ill also be doing the first remodelling of infantry figures in 20+ years too.

Quite fun.

Yeah I was tempted but I had this one and I hate to give up on a kit. Couldnt resist the figures though, the old emhar ones etc are just nasty and I hadnt already got any.

Little more scratching at the back.

probably next up is the dreaded rails. Do I try to save the kit parts?

I always try to save the kit parts ... but the quality of your scratch-building leads me to believe this need not apply to you.

I bought some 2mm plastic angle..I can either make new rails or cut off the brackets from the kit rails (it is the brackets that are really offensive) and just use those with scratched brackets.

I will probably try to make them from scratch, might be easier than all that cutting up of parts!

Not sure if I should go to the effort of adding armour plates to the fuel tank area, as they seem to have been an addon on some tanks as seen in this picture.

The takom and tamiya kits clearly have them. maybe I should
