Would like to join this group build.. my subject is the Kamov Ka 29 in 1/72 by Zvezda. Ka 29 is a modern Russian helicopter designed to support amphibious landings.

Good stuff. It should make an interesting model.

How do these things turn when they're just hovering? - the rudders wouldn't do anything and there's no tail rotor. I guess they alter the speed of one set of blades to get some unbalanced torque reaction from the engines?
Hadley, you flown one of these? :)

Welcome to the Helicopter GB Simon, it's great having another participant.

I've been wondering what the Zvezda kit was like for the Ka-29. Now I'm a little wiser. I bought the Hobby Boss 1-48 kit last year and had been wondering who made the better 1-72 variant.

I'll look forward to your updates as they come in the future.

Regards
Steve

Haha na there's none of those in NZ. And yeah I'd say rpm would alter slightly to turn in a hover

I think that must be right - the top and bottom rotors move at slightly different speeds and the helicopter will turn, plus the rotors have control arms which adjust the tilt of the blades at different points in the cycle? The idea of the Kamov series with this rotor arrangement was to create a very compact machine which could be carried on board cruisers, the Ka 25 was the most famous one used for anti-submarine and over -the -horizon missile target acquisition.
Anyway the kit...
Made a start - cockpit interior , seats instrument panel and some (what ?) equipment installed. Hardly any of this is visible when the canopy is finished, even though the windows look quite big..

Cockpit assembly attached to fuselage, again, not too concerned., the seemingly large gap is completely hidden by the next assembly.

Exhausts painted prior to installing through the fuselage sides

Remaining windows in place - needed quite a bit of sanding to fit, and the sides fixed together..

Cabin roof decal- a bit of a waste, but at least we know it's there,

And where I'm up to now, with the front and side windscreens in place and the cabin roof on :cheer:

Landing gear and weapons racks in place - all went together quite easily

Paint masks ( ) in place

Paint applied - Base colour was a 50:50 mix Humbrol 167 'Barley grey': Hu65 'Aircraft bue' to give it the blue tinge seen under some light conditions
Top /'mottle' colour was 1;1:1 Hu 32 'Gunship grey': Hu23 'Duck egg blue': Hu65

Rotor assembly - 2 for the price of 1. the kit makes a tricky job quite easy here (same with the struts etc on the fuselage sides).

All assembly done

Decals on and just about finished

Nearly done...

Just need to make my landing ship deck to put it on for the final photo shoot.

Thanks for watching and all the encouragement :cheer:

Ha, agreed, it is not an easy thing to find a picture of ;) but fortunately someone made a model of the actual ship these helicopters are used on (see commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IvanRogovLSModel.jpg ), and the landing pad looks really simple - I am planning to do the really simple landing pad - not the whole ship :P

Nice quick build.

don't know how Zvezda planes are, But their ships are hit ans miss. Some really good (HMS Dreadnought for one) and some that just need to go straight to the trash can.

They turn while hovering by changing the pitch on the rotors. Increase one, decrease the other to induce torque.

Here is a pic of one landing on ship. Should be an easy to make base

That is so awesome - thanks.
I've made a few Zvezda plane kits and they are all pretty good so far - the main thing I have noticed is the clear parts seem to be made in a different factory to the rest of the kit because they hardy ever fit. Also the instructions can be a bit unclear and often only written in Russian. They are very accurate (shape/appearance wise) - I wish they made a bigger range.

Despite my best intentions, never got around to building an actual carrier deck, so the printout will have to suffice - never was big on dioramas ;)
Finish photos are on the thread - a case of throwing my hat in the ring, - nowhere near the standard of the 1/48 models - but a neat little subject anyhow and it has that typical USSR look of being cute but mean all at the same time.

On with the next build!
