AH-6J Little Bird was created by Hadley
I've been trying to decide what to build next, there's a few options with a few ideas, but I've decided to do something I've yet to do. Aftermarket parts replaced/added to a stock kit.
The kit: Academy MH-6 Stealth Quiet Attack Helicopter
Scale: 1/48
Aftermarket pieces: CMK AH-6F/J Attack Version Conversion and weapon set
Decals: Werners Wings Nighstalkers set

I'm familiar with the Academy Hughes 500 kits as I've built a few of them, and I've had a quick look at the CMK set and looks like the whole interior is in the pack. Plus a bunch of exterior bits.
Two questions, it says the parts are cast...is that another name for resin?
And can I use the usual glue I use or do I need something in particular?

This will take sometime longer than the usual academy kits due to the extra amount of parts plus the extra work needed to the existing parts, but you gotta try new things.

Paint wise I'm wanting a very faded matt black, was thinking of mixing dark gray and black unless someone has a suggestion?

Hi Hadley

To answer your questions:

Yes, cast in this instance is cast in resin

You will need superglue to join your resin parts. Styrene glue won't work. Make sure you wash the resin parts before you paint them so you remove any mold-release agent off them otherwise your paint won't stick.

To fade your black add about 20% white to the black. If you want some tonal variation add some brown to the mix. For other less weathered parts you could add a little dark blue. Do some experimenting until you come up with the desired tones.

Hope that helps
Steve

Nice choice Hadley. I was looking at buying this exact kit and AM parts from BNA as they have them all available. Keen to see what you do with it as I ended up getting the F-117 instead.

Tamiya make a NATO Black and a tyre black that are more grey than Black.

It's a wasted trip baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.

Thanks for the comments guys
Been having a google around looking for others who have done this build, why are the weapons mounted so wide...? they're not that wide usually? I'm referring to the "plank" that goes through the back doors which the rockets and guns mount to

Anyone see what I mean?

Yet again I can't post photos, apparently their "too big", but with the small size and poor quality I've got from the net theres no way

I think your post with Gary referred to images that you took with your camera that were too big in file size. Images you take off the net won't be that big because they will have been edited in size. What software program opens up your images on your PC?

Hadley, do you have a good basic photo editor? I've just downloaded one for this new computer. Very simple for idiots like me to use. I've have, of course, forgotten it's name as I type (age), but if you would like the link then I can hunt it up for you.

Ed. Found it, has a photo resizer and all.

If you refer to reference images, you'll get a pretty good idea of how close the resin conversion parts are or otherwise. The plank you are referring to that the weapons mount on s quite wide, as this plank also doubles as the platform the Spec ops operators sit on for fast insertion/extraction.

If you haven't seen it, from memory, Blackhawk Down gives some very good (and accurate) examples of the plank in use by the Spec Ops guys.

Looking great!
Especially like the seatbelts,
what is the best tool / techniques for cutting parts like the fuselage where you removed doors ?- I quite often avoid doing this, but would like to know what to do, especially with canopies (might seem a dumb question but most of my techniques are from the '80s so plenty to learn here  ).

keep up the great work. cheers :cheer:

I just used my knife, got to be bloody careful tho, as in some parts the plastic is very weak and starts to bend. Once the majority was gone I just gave the lil annoying bits a sand and that was it

Decided to mask up the inside of the window so I could spray the inside black before I attached it, have also added the extra pieces to the outside of the window. Have dummy fitted it and it doesn't sit very tight but with some pressure and super glue I'm hoping it'll set instantly and be ok.....
Have also made up some masks to cover the front doors up so when I spray (with window attached) it doesn't go on the inside of the window
Next chance I get ill give the whole thing a once over, then attach the front window and spray again
It's already black so the coat of nato black should be easy enough

Do you usually use super glue on clear parts? I had fogging on the only occasions that I used it.

A shame to have to resort to super glue. Hopefully it doesn't fog too bad mate.
