Built to Race
Start Date 30/11/2015
End Date 28/04/2017

The Build is open to all current members of KiwiModeller.
Open to ANY Scale of Model using any medium and any method of construction from OOB to complete Scratchbuilt.
ONLY Vehicles of four or more wheels, (excluding motorcycles and motorcycle-like vehicles (i.e. Quads and trike types)).
Depict ONLY motorised vehicles specifically designed and/or built to compete in any class of sanctioned motor racing events from any era, including Land Speed Record attempts. This may include Post Showroom modifications.
If possible, include written and/or photographic documentation of the vehicle/s you are depicting. Yes, we are looking to depict ACTUAL vehicles that have or do exist.
Artistic Bases/Dioramas are acceptable.
The model/s must be built in entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the specific “Built to Race” group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues, and documentation if you have any, at the beginning of your thread. By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post a minimum of five pictures of the completed build in the GB’s completed builds thread.
There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is always welcome.

The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote. Voting will run for seven days from the 28th of April 2017, ending Midday on the 5th of May 2017. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Moderators for this GB are 1/35th Battalion (D1 – David) and one other person yet to offer their services.

I'd suspect you'd be right with those decals but a liter of decal softener should see you right :P

Nice Dave. Will be watching but yeah, those decals. What puts me off building modern racing cars. While I love the look, I hate the fact that all your work gets covered in decals.

Yup, I think I'll buy some stocks in Microscale Industries; Going to need at least several bottles of Microsol and Set, not just for the kit decals but also the AM SMS Carbon Fibre ones that cover a whole heap of the interior, engine bay and body parts too .. . :P
Certainly going to be a major part of the challenge of this build, although the under-painting will effect how well they finish up, but get it right and Oh Boy, Now that Looks Good. Tally Ho chaps and chapesses!

Cool kit B)

I don't envy all those decals. I was going to use a scale motorsport carbon set for a build, until I realised they supply a template, and you have to cut the decals yourself :S

It's a wasted trip baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.

Correct regarding the SMS decals. The set for this kit comes with the template printed on the backing but they don't actually look to be too difficult; there's no really tricky angles or close areas to cut. A new scalpel blade and a steady hand should suffice, he says, holding his breath. I guess we will all find out how these work during this build. :P

Quick word of caution on used of Micro-sol/set on Tamiya decals. When I built my BTCC Volvo Station Wagon, Micro set (I think) reacted with the decals and ruined them....it left marks like watermarks that etched into the decals. I've never had the same problem before or since. It was with the large flat decals too and I was really disappointed. Fortunately someone gave me a spare set....they actually went on really well without the need for decal solvent anyway.
My "go-to" for tricky decals is a hair dryer and warm water.
Good luck

I haven't used the templates before but have read some bad reviews about some of the shapes. Might be go to try the rule measure twice cut one lol

As for the SMS decals they are awesome, found they liked the heat from a hair dryer more then the Micro Sol.

Michael

Cheers Michael

I have to agree with those above, I used a set on a bike and they can be a mission to get on, but heat and solvents really help but they really dont like a lot of manipulation once on as I had a coiuple of tighter angles almost start to rub off like pencil being erased from paper.

Stand aside caffine, this is a job for alcohol.
