Today,
How about starting today?
Has anyone mentioned about starting today?

I started building models, then I was collecting more than I built. Now I'm more of an archivist.

If VD (as the other mod) is happy with starting once we have 10 participants we can kick it off. That way it will be close enough to a year....
Marcus... Just wait a day or two and we should be good to go...

you russian build dudes know what i mean!!!

Best option I've seen out there so far was done by Richard (of Gecko Decals fame). He used a 1:1 mix of Gunze Aqueous H25 Sky Blue and H46 Emerald green, it matches Eduards colour PE (which looks about right to me) perfectly. There are a few different shades of the interior green out there in real aircraft but I challenge anyone to tell you that you've done the wrong shade. Just beware, not all russian aircraft use this colour, some are just plain grey or a grey blue (plus some other variations).

What does VD and everyone else think? This way, even though we have several GB's running at a time being a year long one means no huge time pressures...
If anything is in doubt as to whether or not it is a valid choice for the build, just provide proof that it was first used or was operational during the time frames mentioned in the very first post.

I'm easy with the start and finish dates and I really only based my proposed start/finish times so as not to clash with the other builds too much and to allow a bit of time to pick a subject to build etc. But if an earlier starting time is wished for... how about Jan 1st 2016 through to Nov 9th then?
This allows 11 months to participate and finish a kit and should also allow enough time to participate in one or more of the other builds as well.
I figure starting it before Xmas is just going to clash with many peoples plans over the holidays etc.
While a Jan 1st start still allows for a bit of time to select a suitable subject.
But again... I'm pretty flexible. I've got a Trumpeter 1/48 Su-15 Flagon that's been tickling my fancy of late. :woohoo:

Quite a while ago I picked up a bottle of Vallejo Model Colour "Turquoise" 70.966 for the Russian cockpit blue.
I don't know how good a match it is though as have not test sprayed it yet.

Looks like MiG do a proper mix as well... A.MIG-223

Lol... thanks!
I've read comments that the nose is supposedly incorrect and that there are some issues with the shape of the wings as well apparently.
I picked it as I figured it would be a good canvas to try out a bare metal scheme and I'm not too fussed about the shape either etc.

Also, was mowing the lawns thisarvo and was thinking about the start date of this build and figure that it if there's enough interest (we need 1 more to make 10 to go ahead?) then I don't really see any reason to delay the start until next year. 12 months is ample time for most I should think.

Cheers K1... I hope that MA will stock the full range of MiG paints in the near future as buying sets like these still ends up quite pricey.
I'd like to be able to pick and choose what I want instead. In this case, just the paint without the filter and wash.

Hi,

I'm contemplating taking part but am a bit confused on what's eligible.

It's any Soviet (USSR) Era stuff. Plus any 'Eastern Bloc' Nations but not nations that were affiliated with the USSR???

For Example I could build a MiG-21 in Soviet, East German, Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Romanian Markings. But not in Egyptian or Syrian or Cuban markings?? also no Chinese stuff??

Also as it's pre the break up of the USSR markings for The Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia etc are not allowed?? Finally the marque or type of the subject had too be in service at the fall of the Soviet Union. So If I was to build a Su-27 it would have to be an earlier mark not a later one??

Let me know..

Cheers

John

The Akan paint is very good sprays nicely and gives a good finish. Having used it and the MiG stuff I prefer the Akan. It's very similar to using Gunze..

You are correct there Johnsnz, Anything used by any eastern bloc country including the USSR through till the fall of the berlin wall, so SU-27 is allowed but only early SU-27B/UB. Your statement about the MIG21 is exactly right.

While we've got enough members to make a start on this build, were just waiting to put together the proper subject thread outlining the rules and conditions etc and build threads. Shouldn't be too far away now, so please be patient and don't start just yet. ;)

Just looking at the topic header and the end date is before the finish date.... you have 6 disguised as a 5 lol.

I might have to see about this GB also.

Been ages since I did a group build here, do we still need to print out a logo/image to place in the photos of the build?

Michael

Thanks Michael, good catch ;) Has been sorted now.

It looks like there may have been a bit of confusion about the subject of this build and what it covers so I have edited the original post to clarify it and list the conditions of entry etc. If anyone still has any queries, feel free to ask away.

As it's now the 17th... this build has officially started so smoke em if ya gotem! :woohoo:

Looking forward to seeing what you all build and hope everyone enjoys it. ;)

Does this count?

As far as I can tell the kit options (Blue 01 and Blue 156) are both prototype machines (because that is as far as the m got?) and the Mig-29m was developed in the "mid 1980s". There is a picture online of Blue 156, the sixth prototype, from Farnborough in 1992. Surely they must have been airworthy prior to 1990.

What say ye?
