We've had Aircraft and Armour Group builds before on Kiwimodeller, but never a dedicated ship building group build. Time to get your ship together!

The GB will be launched on 1st November 2016, and run until 1st November 2017.

It is open to any scale, and material

The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 1st of November, ending Midday the 8th of November. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Moderators will be Andrew and Declan (Gibbs)

Had a bit of a 'downer' on this one, hence going back to some armour. Not used to building something with so many, frankly crappy, oob parts like oversize ladders, solid turrets etc.

Anyway to cheer me up I did some experiemental weathering on the hull.. quite please with the effect, might be enough to get me into gear on it.

That is some very nice streaking and weathering you have there. what products did you use to achieve this?

2 different shades of AK streaking enamel.. Winter and DAK (I like the colours!) and then AK rust streaks at the places I thought rust would form most.

dabbed the streaking along the top edge of each panel (taking care not to get it on the lower edge of the panel above, and under holes and features, then did the whole wet-brush thing downwards.. then did the rust streaks afterwards.

Trying to emphasise the panels as much as get an overall grime as I feel the sides of the model are rather flat and dull, but I dislike most of the results I have seen from people's attempts to paint 'oil canning'

Love the weathering mate. Shame about the chunky parts but your work looks great.

Nice result with the weathering. The kit is quite nicely detailed in parts despite some over scale anomalies.

A solution without spending further money is using some kit stretched sprue to make a ladder. Tape the stretched sprue spaced evenly apart to a cutting mat, and use a touch of welding cement where each rung and rail passes. Trim off the surplus rungs and rails and hey presto instant ladder!

Thanks for the encouraging words guys. I will stick to the oob program, only the rigging will be thin twine instead of the string in the kit.

This is pretty much the plastic complete and base-coloured. few more boats and ladders are painted but they will go on after weathering

Well in the spirit of the OOB I was just going to add the lines described by revell (albeit not using hairy string as supplied)

When I build the emden half of ther kit with artermarket/scratch I was going to try for the full monty

Good luck with the rigging mate :) I done a bit on my 1/700 '92 Missouri... using the EZ-Line though, which is really very nice to use. If you're going to go full monty on your next one, I would recommend getting that if you haven't already.

Thought I would drop a progress shot on this, seeing as I have been working on it again at last.

more bits added, and lots of weathering/distressing underway

More progress.. mostly done with the main ship, adding the boats and wires for them, wires are a complete nightmare to do, so damned fiddly!

Thanks tiger!

Still a lot of rigging to go (A LOT) and some more weathering to go on the side you cant see.. then I will probly call it done and go onto the base.

You have done a great job on what was a barely adequate kit in the 90s.

Don't let this turn you off floaty things

Nah Im all up for building the actual good ship kit (academy indianapolis full addons) I have once this and my other projects are out of the way..

It really is a pretty mediocre kit.. but hey paint covers a lot of ills, and once the miles of rigging are on and a nice water base it wont look too bad.
