We've had Aircraft and Armour Group builds before on Kiwimodeller, but never a dedicated ship building group build. Time to get your ship together!

The GB will be launched on 1st November 2016, and run until 1st November 2017.

It is open to any scale, and material

The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 1st of November, ending Midday the 8th of November. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.

Moderators will be Andrew and Declan (Gibbs)

So this may or may not be my entry.. I have a big build planned but this safe little one is a start on ships for me!

This is being built OOB. Weird I know. The Emden might end up being a full on detailed followup.

Im going to rely on painting-power to make this work, so we shall see.

You don't sound too confident... the kit can't be that bad. :)
I know what you mean by starting 'safe' on this GB - ships can turn into major projects. I've a couple of 'warm-up' builds planned before the 'big' one (which could be one of three projects)..... Can we get an extension on this GB already? :P

So which one is the Dresden? The grey one or the pretty white & yellow one?

Now that you mention it, the Emden does look a bit too 'Hermann Goering' :)

Badly done it could look a shocker lol. Im sort of saving it for when I feel a bit more confident on ships, because the flipside of the white and yellow oddness is that it could look amazing if done really well.

Gun turret and bridge.. going to need to do some clever painting tricks to cover up how simplified some things are!

More bits.. dry fitted at this stage of course. Bit of work making joins in funnels invisible!

Working on the hull, tricky jointing/filling as expected from a 4 part ship hull!

Oooh, they look like a right headache. Every time I come across something like that in a kit I just about go and buy a lathe... but I still haven't yet.

The breakdown in the hull is interesting. Do the Dresden & Emden differ in this area?
Or perhaps Revell have allowed for a motorised option to be built from the kit. You'd better make those joins water tight. :)

Progress is looking good and the detail looks ok - plenty of portholes and doors to break up the surfaces. And it's amazing what a difference just a few rigging lines can make at the end.

Yeah the two differ.. its the only difference in the kits, the Emden is a two screw steam engine, the dresden a 4 screw turbine

Im sticking pretty definitely to my oob plan (god its so tempting to start cutting things!) with a few little tweaks to surface detail, notably the canvas cover on the bridge is going to look a bit like canvas, just using some filler.

Yes, 1907 launch. Both ships fought extensively in WW1, the Dresden in both Pacific and Atlantic.

The Emden is much more famous, with her Pacific raiding exploits attracting a rather large 'romantic' following at the time.

I see there were two SMS Dresdens in WW1, after the first was scuttled in 1915 the Germans launched another in 1917. It must have been confusing for the RN... "Look Sir it's the Dresden, I could have sworn she went to the bottom two years ago. If this sort of thing carries on, the war will never end. It's just not cricket!" :)

I like the 'gun emplacements' on the upper hull. It looks like they were going to put two more at the rear but forgot to order the guns. :pinch:

Indeed, the initial stages of my research were much confused by the replacement they launched 1 year after this one sank!

There is much online 'debate' about the rear guns and whether they should be there. I will try to be definitive when I detail the Emden later

I have in fact been working on this some!

Decided to do some test painting on the upper features, as they are nice and discreet.

Basic washed light grey on the bridge and funnels I am quite happy with. The guns are meh but might do. The brown is linoleum which eventually covers most surfaces not made of timber, and as far as I can establish there is no reference whatsoever on this apart from a vague 'reddish brown'

Im reasonably content with that colour, so having masked and sprayed the timber deck base colour, I will mask and spray the linoleum areas next

The hull will be in three colours in fact, red of course then dark grey, then all hull above the deck level is light grey like the superstructure.

Hey that dark brown deck really make the details stand out. With the red hull it'll be quite a sight.
Are the guns, bridge etc not glued on or have you spent a whole day masking? :)

Are you going to do teased cotton wool, sprayed with hair-spray, coming out of the funnels? I have actually seen it done very well somewhere on the net. It started out dense then thinned out as though the smoke was dissipating. I'm sure if I tried it I'd end up with something like Marge Simpson's hair. :pinch: Doh!

Yeah the cotton wool thing sounds iffy lol

The parts, funnels, guns and bridge are dry fitted as tests only. That said the deck unit still took extensive masking to allow the wood and the linoleum to be sprayed accurately, but only one tiny area of underspray needed cleaning up! Hand painting those black windows was worse heh.

The hull masking for the colours so far was simple enough, and looks nicer in person, lovely and sharp, has a coat of a light varnish so I can safely mask it again for the red tomorrow.

lots of things to add and stuff to merge/tidy up too

Very nice. The dark deck gives it a real charm, almost a passenger liner look.... the guns give it away though.

Did Revell supply a stand?

I'm not sure about the elephants. According to Wiki it was the Emden that spent some time around India.
The Dresden preferred Sth America. Do you have a Llama? :)

lol took me a minute to figure out what the hell you were talking about with elephants.

There is a plastic stand on the frets but I cant see me using it. Im not even a bit sure what to do with it once it is finished actually. I guess a stand will do, the fancied up Emden can be waterlined perhaps.

Id prefer to do both in water but its not very practical now and I also have no idea how to do that
