I have a 1/72 Hasegawa A-4F Skyhawk. I wanted to make it into an RNZAF when I first obtained the kit, but I am not too sure on the types of Skyhawks we had.

Would anyone be able to give any information? I can obtain the decals for markings, so I'm not worried about that, more about whether she would be an accurate build.

Also, the poll is there, as I would like to know what you guys think, modify it to become RNZAF, or keep her as she should be, OOB.

Cheers

I reckon OOB. There's a few RNZAF builds, and given the time left of the GB, you may want to keep it simple. That and the fact that the US birds look so nice with their splashes of colour IMO.

It would be quite unique to do the Aussie scheme, but I wouldn't have a clue where I would get decals for that from. I know of someone that can supply RNZAF decals, so looking into that.

Decals for Aussie schemes are available on eBay and probly from the likes of BNA.
I'll put my vote in for that too. You'll probably be the only Aussie Scooter ...
Incidentally, when is the deadline? I thought this was a year-long GB?
Cheers
Wally.

As much as we are bothers in arms, and ANZAC - I think I would rather have it RNZAF, if I was going to modify it lol. I know it would be different, and maybe in the future I will do another, and make her RAAF..... hhmmm....

Welcome aboard. With less than a month to go, I'd keep it simple, and be nice to have some more non-Kiwi jets built.

Wally,
GB deadline is June 22 and build was for 6 months.

Look up Novascale. They make both RNZAF and RAN decals for all sorts of aircraft used by both countries.

These were operated by the Aussie navy, so technically RAN, not RAAF.

If you add the square fin tip to the Hasegawa kit, out of the box it builds as an early non-Kahu jet in SEA camo colours (brown and two greens over grey) before we refitted the bent refuelling probe.

Note that Hasegawa actually screwed up the kit length and made the nose too long from the intakes forward. One story has that they used the length of the two-seater, the other is that they used the tip of the nose probe measurement as the tip of the nose measurement. Still looks like a Skyhawk once built and it is still in the Hasegawa catalogue after al these years (and sells well).

RNZAF decals in 1/72 are/were available from Flying Kiwis and Microscale, though both sets are long out of production and both had their issues with accuracy.

Just furthering Craig's comments, it's a really old moulding (1971 at least), not super accurate or super detailed but it goes together really nicely I've found. Also if you have a look in the spare parts thread of this challenge I've posted a few spare decals and parts for 1/72 A-4's as well that might give you some options.

Hi guys, so going to go with the US version of this, the original version. Will be built OOB, so will be interesting to see how it all goes. Time to start studying up the actual aircraft with details, colours and history.

Thanks to all who voted, the vote also reflects my decision. I think if I'm going to make a A-4K - it will be in 1/48 scale.

Er mah gerd!! I have had a good close look at the kit, and the avionics hump on the back is OPTIONAL!!!! I can do the K class..... bloody hell... or the RAN version... hhmmmmm... I do like the camo scheme for the RAN... and then there's the patriotism for making a kahu class.... and then there's making the original model...

bloody hell... I wish I had known about the hump being optional....
