Thanks DM (and everyone else), if you do decide to build a 'Vietnam' era Skyhawk, I got some spare decals from the CAM sheet you can have.

Been a couple of weeks since I picked this one up. Yesterday went for a simple oil wash in to all the panel lines, and some scorch marks around the cannons. This squadron and indeed this carrier were only in-theatre for a short time in 1970, so the aircraft wouldn't look as 'battered' as some of their 'cousins'.

More soon, probably after the weekend.

Ian.

Thanks, Nos'. I'm taking it step-by-step, matey. Today I'll spray the tyres, paint the oleo sections and add the nose-gear doors, nothing too exciting.

Thank you gentlemen, always appreciate your comments. As it turned-out I didn't get any work done on this today...

...the six-disc set of Star Wars arrived at 10am, and I sought-of lost track of time after that. All I know is that it's 1842 in the evening, and I'm faint with hunger, and my family think I've lost-my-mind somewhere in a Galaxy far, far away.

Looks like your nearly there Ian. Looks awesome!

Can you share any tips on how you went about painting the red trim on the gear doors?.... and getting it looking neat and tidy. ;)

Hmmm... I REALLY don't want to come-off as a smart*rse, but the honest truth is, that I've done it before. I use a good #1 or #0 sable brush, well-thinned Tamiya acrylic flat red and lots and lots of patience. Nothing magical nor corner-cutting. I know some folks use very thin 'Sharpies' and if I was working in 1:72 I'd do that too. But for this, I simply painted them.

Cheers mate... I was wondering if you had sprayed the red first, then masked it off prior to doing the internal & external surfaces etc.
I don't think I'd trust myself trying to free hand it... at any scale.

I did it the same way as Ian for the first time on my A-4 for this GB and it worked surprisingly well. You just have to take it slow and use a really small brush...

Hey DM, just flick back to the opening photo, you'll see the scheme - VA-212 'Rampant Raiders' flying off USS Hancock in 1973.

Well it's done !!

Just letting the satin varnish dry dry now, then add the cannons and slats. Final job will be unmasking the canopy. Looking forward to getting the pics up for you all.

So here's the photos of the completed project. Not happy with certain aspects of the build, but that's probably down to my own deficiencies, the 'plastic' was very easy to work with not too much filler needed. Yes there are a few questions around the shape of the canopy, and that it sits a wee bit too low on its gear, but for (relatively) a few bucks this early 1980's kit is just fine.

I've posted the required five pics on the 'Gallery' thread, here's the full eight plus a photo of Commander G M. Sturm VA-152's commander at the time - this is CAG's machine but I'm guessing he was probably allowed to fly it from time-to-time.

Thanks for the encouragement during the build and as ever, all comments criticism and questions are welcome.

Ian.

End result looks very good Ian. Nice to see another non-RNZAF build here.

2nd across the line. Nice to see that the interest is still there for the challenge.
