My entry will be scooter 254 from the '84 Cope Thunder exercise in the Philippines. Seen here in the Don Simms book taxiing at Clark AFB wing tanks and three retarded 'bricks'




Well known kit courtesy of Craigs Kiwimodeller special last year


Decals will be Gekko for everything except codes. The Gekko part 1 set has the large green tiki motif (not really visible in the pic, but other aircraft are sporting that one at the exercise). Codes cobbled together from wherever I can find them as there are no white fives on the sets (only single seaters are depicted in the sets). The small 'T' required for the 'TA-4K' will either be masked and sprayed or from small strips of decals.

Bombs probably from a Hase weapons set or maybe Eduard has some resin ones now that there are into that arena also.

If for some reason I cannot sort the decals for the codes it will be a change to this bird






Sporting the GBU-12 that was trialled in '83. Full decals in the Gekko Part 2 decal set.

Wally, no special knowledge, everything I have gleaned is from the book, 'Skyhawks - The history of the RNZAF Skyhawk'

It is the go to book and the one I am most fond of on my shelf





It is still available from its Nz publisher and is $85 www.willsonscott.biz/catalogue/military/...f-the-rnzaf-skyhawk/
They give lots of details on its use, great photos and the added warmth of personal recollections and letters from the people who where there.

The only other thing I would like is a detail photos and explanations book like Jake Melampys Viper guides and hornet guides and the like.

I loaned that book from the library a while back and it is definitely a great book. Not just for the photos but also the text is very interesting. Reading some of the stories made me wish I had stayed true to my boyhood dream of being an airforce pilot...

The Eduard Brassin Snakeyes are very nice but a little more pricey.

I have that book, and I even make a cameo in one of the pics in it. Don S was from the same era I was in the RNZAF and is still a good friend today.

Pre commencement photo, bags not yet opened.



Standard kit plus some photo etch I had and a Master Model refuelling probe tip.

Travelling to Nelson my home town with my family for the holidays so I have no compressor with which to paint, so work will not begin in the cockpit this time.
Will probably cut and shut slat recess and just start removing major items taping them together and flying around the room.

So we begin, test flight around the room.

First thing I did was to have a look at the slat recesses as they are going to get cut out and repositioned.




Cut out like so, got the cuts kind of straight so there might have to be some unfortunate use of filler and sanding later on but will have a look after there is some primer on



Drilled a couple of holes through the back of the air brake recesses to drop in some extra thin the fix the air brakes in position

How/why are you re-positioning the slats? Im keen because looking at my model which is a Hasegawa as well, I was wondering what to do with the slats.

All Skyhawk kits have a step moulded on the wing where the slat recess finishes and the wing starts, so that if the slats are modelled retracted they sit in the correct position. Unfortunately, on the real aircraft the trailing edge of the slats is very thin and there is no step on the wing. To Correctly depict the Skyhawk with the slats down, you need to eliminate the recessed step. Easiest way is to cut out the slat recess and re-glue higher up so the step is removed.

I think one of the chaps here had a flight in the Blunty last year? hadley maybe?

Andrew Taylor had the flight in the Blunty. That was actually a while back but he has since had another one. It does kinda help that he is the main ground controller for them, replete in all his US Navy gear...

Nah, I'll leave it as a cameo. Bit hard to make out features anyway.

Already correcting the recesses on my 1/32 A-4 (see build thread). Very easy to do.

Previous pic of the A-4 wing and slat area looks to be the ex-USN A-4L in Wigram museum, made to reassemble an early A-4K.

Back from holiday, very nice it was too.
Today's pics just show more of what I was doing when away. The air brakes are inserted and the slat recesses glued into a more correct position.
Now that i am back home where the compressor is I will start prepping some of the cockpit areas for paint.

Hi lads,

Progress on my scooter has been slow and steady, prepping the cockpit pieces now for some grey paint, just been gluing the bulkheads. Over a month gone, must be getting old, catch myself muttering "where has the time gone?".

I'm not as old as the scooter but I did have a birthday a few days ago. Got a card from the kids, you know the ones, where the kids paint on the front and scribble on the insides and your wife writes a little message.

So here it is,






Your favorite attack aircraft coming in for a low altitude dust up, gotta love it.

Will get some more pics of the build up soon.
Keep up the good work guys, I keep hitting recent topics to follow your progress.

I used the JLC razor saw,





Cut down the sides from the leading edge in and then laid the wing half on the cutting mat and using the tip of the blade scribed down the length of the cut a few times and then using the spare blade from the above photo just held it in my fingers and slid it back and forth for a very long time. Once I had broken through I used the handled blade and opened the cut up to its full length where upon the recess slid free and mocked me for the greater part of an hour I had just spent cutting checking and repeating.

It is the first time I have done it and it will look ok after a bit of tidying up. I will do it on other A4s in future also, standard deal, I will need to practise it a bit more before I get good at it. Possible though some guys have removed and re glued them so crisp it looks original.

I find the easiest method (and it will take you about 10 minutes Marcus instead of an hour) is to use a razor saw - I use a photo-etched Hasegawa one - and saw up each side of the slat well until you reach the back of it where it steps up to the wing.

Once that is done, I use a new/sharp scalpel blade and run it along the back of the step 2 or 3 times. The first run is a light cut using the step to guide the blade. Then I'll follow up with another cut using slightly more pressure and then a third cut. Only use the very tip of the blade.

Once I've run 3 cuts, carefully bend the slat area downwards (being careful not to break off the slat attachment rails) and the whole assemble should come away with a sharp edge and very little loss of plastic. You are only mating the slat well at the very top of the back area, so the fine cuts give a clean mating area, and snapping it away makes it quick and you can easily clean up the break with a hobby knife or file for a nice flat mating surface.

So that is most of the cockpit items ready. A couple more bits of PE for the IPs, throttles and then a dry fit to the fuselage halves. Photos are not clearest but there are some shiny spots in places from CA, a satin coat will go on one night in an effort to neutralise that, same time as the intakes and exhaust get some paint.

The PE helps the cockpit no end but you do need a torch you can lay on the floor so that when you have your cheek on the carpet you can see it shine.
It was self adhesive PE. But for all small parts it still needed a a bit of CA to hold. The big bits like side consoles and IPs held but others that get pocked and prodded a bit to place like the harness needed glue.

Three months gone, half way.

Baby steps.
Cockpits in, I thought the rear IP would go under the partition like the front one does but it just seams to push up against it.







Painted the throttles and sticks tonight and glued them in. Next time it will be a painting session with the satin clear to clean up the shinny spots and to put colour on the intakes and exhaust.
