Custom 1/24 Nissan D21 Navara was created by yak
As always when i have been around other modellers from here i came back from AiC re-enthused. On sunday arvo i hit the model room, but instead of picking up one of the many partly made kits i have stacked in the corner i was more interested in a new challenge something i could do some serious hacking with. This is something i have wanted to have a go at for awhile and had got the donor kits late last year, they also happed to be on the top of the pile. So decision made.
The 720 i have three different uses for, I removed the front valance as this is going to rebuild the front of the Revell 720 Kingcab, which was lost many years ago. This build and the cab area will be in another chop shop build at a later date. The front of the terrano and back of the 720 removed.

Then started to piece it back together. the chassis halves joined and test fitted i removed the flairs from the 720 sides and trimmed up the rear quarters from the terrano before glueing them to the tray sides. luckily the D21 is slightly wider than the 720 making this pretty easy.

Will it include a Razorback deck for the murdered hoggs? lol
Maybe strap one on the bonnet.
You certainly like a challenge, look forward to watching this.

Also added the rear of the terrano to use as the base of the tail gate. some plastic card to fill in the gaps where the terrano sides aren't long enough. And cut the sunroof from the glassing to fill that in as well. Then last night i reshaped the tailgate made the number plate panel under the tailgate and smeared in some tamiya putty

 Nah this one is going to fit in with my low rider fleet. I do have a few 4X4 kits though and that is a very interesting idea. I'm sure i can find a suitable pig or deer to mod from the toy shop.

Chopping stuff up and gluing bogging them together is one thing, but getting them to look this good is an artform. Watching with interest. "pretty easy" says Rob, yeah right.

Cheers guys. Bishop, Yeah it feels more like modelling doing this sort of thing compared to assemble and paint on a well designed and manufactured kit but both are so much fun to do if your in the right frame of mind.

Had some time to waste today so gave this a sand then a coat of primer to find the areas that need a bit more putty. It's starting to look bit like a navara now. Also decided to modify the wheels instead of getting another set, will probably paint the centres as well

Got it in primer and found a few more little bits needing putty and then realised i have forgotten to add the fuel flap and tail gate handle :pinch:

I have hit a bit of a wall with this, I picked the colour i wanted to use and when making it up it called for a medium and a coarse metallic. I swapped these out for ultra fine and fine to get the same effect but more to scale, and it hasn't really worked it looks to sparkly. if i am to respray it I will make the colour again but just use ultra fine mett, i will need to re-scribe the top of the doors and windscreen molding as they have pretty much filled up with clear and will disappear with another coat of colour. The photos do make the sparkly even worse but what are peoples thoughts? Should i just carry on or attempt to fix?

Of course it is hard to tell in the photos, especially because I don't know the look you are going for.
In my view it looks great and would keep it as is,... but this is your vision and you have put a huge amount of work into the conversion therefore the only person who has to be happy with the outcome is you...

I see what you mean, the flakes look quite big but having said that I don't think it detracts from the overal appearance at all.
You often see this with metalics and small objects, on full size vehicles it doesn't even come in to play but when you scale the object down the paint flakes don't always scale down.
I'm no expert in building model cars but I think it looks fine as it is, you could always put a couple of heavy gloss coats on and emphasize the look.

Cheers guys, I original idea was that it was just a tidy old ute that someone had picked up and lowed and fitted wheels. Now it's more like its a lowrider show truck that's been resprayed with a coarse flake in it, If i was going for that look i would have gone with a far more exciting colour. I think if it was a standard kit and not something i have had to create i wouldn't be so worried. I've been looking at it the last few days trying to decide where to go with it, the shelf of doom is calling.

No that would be a real waste to do that Rob, I'd definately go with the whole ultra gloss finish, make the course flake a feature of a really rich deep paint job.
Make it look like one of those wooden tables where you get a plank of some really grainy wood and dip it in clear resin, where the course grain is part of the finish which is also ultra smooth and shiny.

I get where you're coming from Rob. As it currently sits it's neither a show car, nor a custom daily? I get the feeling if it were a show car small things like the door handles would be shaved, side indicators removed, billet mirrors etc. The colour reminds me of my dad's old sage green Datsun 1200 ute, so I think the colour is pukka.

I get the feeling you know the answer but perhaps don't feel commited to carrying it out? I'm sure whatever you do with it will still give a good looking model. I prefer the super fine metallic you mention, but in saying that have one other suggestion. Why not two tone it in the same green below the handle line with a fine metallic as per attached pic. If you still don't like it you can paint out the remaining flake or vice versa or all of it!

I also agree with G1 in that a deep clear coat will really make this pop, but you already knew that.

Nail on the head there Terry.

I have had a look in mind for this since i first came up with the idea of how to make it so i'm finding it hard to get past that. putting a flow coat on to get the depth although a good idea i don't really think its the right colour for this type of vehicle to pull off that look. Maybe painting the top from the swage line up black or charcoal would look alright but then i'm in the same position as i would be if i repainted it so may as well stay with my original idea.

I'm going to put it aside for a bit and work on some others while i have a think about where to go with it.

Sounds like you need to spray a coat of oven cleaner in it and get the colour you want. The scratch building is too good for the shelf.

Nothing ever stays on the shelf for long around here . I just have a break from it, could be a few days could be months but i always tend to get them finished in the end. The longer i leave this and see it every day i'm starting to accept it. If it's not in direct light it actually looks ok.
