1/25 AMT 1950 Chevy 3100 was created by yak
I have had a year of stop start modeling which has meant i have lost interest in my builds when i have found time to get back to them. I now have five started kits :S We went over to Tasmania recently for a holiday and in my down time i started thinking of modeling again, so started watching youtube videos. I have always wanted to try making a patina finished model and had brought a 3 kit pack on trademe before we left that would fit the bill.
I chose the 1950 Chevy as one fellow i watched a lot of on youtube rated it his number one kit. This has been the worst kit i have ever built!! Anyway we got back three weeks ago and i have been working on this a few hours here and there in the hope of having it ready for AiC. I decided to just build it then post some pics at the end to save my spare time for modeling instead of computer time.

The last owner had removed the roof so first up was refitting that and rebuilding the missing detail.
Then primed it with an oxide red primer as base for the rust. I sprayed it a fair way back from the model to get a fine lumpy surface texture as well.

No model left behind even if it screams all the way to the display shelf!

Then the salt was applied
The idea is that the truck has had the inside, underside and engine etc restored but the outside body work left as found
After the salt had dried it was airbrushed with tamiya acrylic blue. once dry i cleaned the salt off.

Then was pigment and detail painting. And final assembly which has been a nightmare and required a lot of cutting, shaving, removal and modifying to get it together. The result looks like a pick up but there are a lot of bits i can pick on but will just call it done anyway and move on. Will post finished pics up after AiC but here's a little taste

Nice work. I just love rusty vehicles. Great job on refitting the roof also. Something to be aware of - The first time I used the salt technique the model keep getting droplets of moisture on it after it was finished, looked like sweat. Salt attracts moisture from the air. Once the body is painted I now very gently wash it in warm soapy water to get rid of any traces of salt.

If you do another - when doing the rust coloured base coat, try several different rust shades so you have some variety in rust tones once you remove the salt. I am not an expert, just sharing my experiences.

That looks really good Rob, love the engine work the leads look real.
I use the salt technique but have lately been experimenting with a different method, wereby you lay up the picments under the top paint then activate it with thinners. It makes the rust "burst" through the paint.
Here's part of something I've been working on for someone.

Thanks guys,

Admoto- Yes both of which came up in the videos i watched, I didn't want to buy anything for this just use whatever i had so that's the reason for the monotone base colour and the washing part i just completely forgot about  but first time attempt next time will be better prepared and bit more time.

Gary- That is Awesome :woohoo: will have to talk to you more about how you did that on sunday.
