The Datsun 240Z was one of the top selling sports cars of all time. Nissan built them as a competitor for the likes of Jaguar, alfa romeo, lotus etc's offerings and like them by the second model the 260Z they introduced the 2+2 option (four seater) but for some reason they never brought out a convertible. In fact they never did until the second gen 300ZX in the 90's.
It's a shame because the car has nice lines that would have made a great looking convertible, and many other people seem to think so as well with lots being cut down over the years. Though for me i havent seen one that's been done very well. Most likely because the strength of the car dictates what can and can't be cut off.
Lucky for me plastic doesn't have that problem and this is going to be my take on what a Factory drop top could have looked like.
I made this fujimi kit 20+ years ago and it shows my taste at the time (glad i never got my real one until i was older) and when i got back in to the hobby i earmarked it to be converted when i thought i had the skills to carry it out. I'm still not sure i'll be able to get it finished right but seeing Ian's corvette the other day got me thinking about it again and this is the results of the last few days.
Oh Nice work their Yak. The hips you have added look perfect. A bit of Jag, a bit of Triumph, a bit of Corvette too with that nice big flat boot space. Watch it, though, Hadley might try to land something on it.
Nice Job. Looking forward to seeing more. I would do that to a model but I would never look at doing it to my 240z.as it would just ruin the value. There was a prototype convertible that Nissan were playing around with at some stage. It is a shame it did not go into production.
Thanks everyone. Will be a bit of work but think it'll shape up ok in the end, cutting the roof off has exposed an interior that isn't meant to be on open display so will have a bit of work in there. The factory would most likely have gone with the classic colour combo for roadsters of red and tan. Will use factory colour options when time comes. I'm not a fan of red but will most likely go with red or orange on the body but tan was never an option in the S30 range but they did do a colour called "bone" so this will most likely be what i do.
Brian, I've got a 71 as well, Mines white with black trim, But i have a 180B SSS with "butterscotch" and i've always thought of it as more brown than tan. Tan to me would be more like the creamy beige the S130's had. And for the non Z fanatic watching
I thought the white cars had a red interior. Is your car original or have you restored it? Mine is now metallic blue with a black interior. I just could not do the factory colour scheme of brown on brown. I'm not too worried about originality as I don't ever intend on selling it. There were also blue interiors but they were fairly rare from what I gather.
