Achilles was created by sillyboy
Currently building 1/72 Achilles, any info that I haven't managed to gather would be welcomed, Information and plans are scarce but I did find a great Polish book on the Leander class light Cruisers. Have slowly pinned down some of the differences as above the hull nearly every one was different!!!!!

Thanks, Yes hence Silly Boy!!!, Airfix a wreck that I pulled apart sanded excess glue added a few bits of detail and rigging along with all new struts. Would have been easier to start from new but couldn't find one at the time and was given this one. everything else scratch built but I have some 3D printed stuff to go on that will look very nice.

Welcome to KM from AUstralia. That’s great work so far. That’s a big ship. The big scale stuff is the best!! Not that I’m biased or anything.

Welcome to the site.
As the others have said that's one big model, it's not a kitset is it? Is it some kind of resin shell or have you made it all yourself?
It looks very sharp.

Thank you all for the welcome, Hull is 50 mm goldfoam, layered, I have a sign writing business, so drafted the plan forms and sent them to a company in ChCh that cut the basic shape for me. Glued together and the side view was cut with hot wire. After shaping I used polyester resin to seal it and then good ol' builders bog to give it a bit of strength and find any misshapen bits, which, with the way I do things would almost be a guarantee. The hull is then clad in .7mm PVC sheeting from the waterline up as is the deck. All superstructure etc is made from 1 mm PVC sheet ( I get this from a supplier in 900 x 1200 mm sheets for nix ). Automotive spray primer and lots of sanding. spotlight towers PVC and evergreen L and I beam etc. My Dad was a Chief Stoker on Achilles, from just after River Plate, to Guadal Canal where they were bombed, Transferred to Gambia after she suffered a gas explosion during re fit, and later back to Achilles toward end WW2. Plan to paint her in the one and short lived camouflage scheme. Just Grey doesn't really wind me up!!!!

Progress on Achilles, around the Bridge area, and hull painted from waterline down, next step here to add reinforcing around anchor exit. Finally figured out the layout fro the aft part of the bridge but not the main layout in the forward part. Made two paravanes and have temporarily mounted them off the bridge in line with where drawings show them, mounts I have fudged up some but now wondering if they are actually placed on mounts off the deck? I constantly go over images I have in different area's and in some you don't see little items that will make a huge difference to the end product e.g. the vane mounts at front of bridge holding the "splash"? guard.

Settled on design and layout of Catapult and a recent find of another similar tends to support my layout. Anchor deck painted with deck plate pattern in place, now just remaining fittings to add. Have 3D printed Vickers Quad .5's coming along with Mk 5 4" deck guns and Mk 21 torpedo tubes. But these and the watertight doors and square port windows are the only items that I will have fabricated. There is a point where it ceases to be scratch built otherwise, and the monotony of repeatedly constructing these items to a decent standard would send me nuts!!

A bit more progress, includes 3D Torpedo tubes, 4" mk 5 deck guns and a couple more .5 quad vickers, have narrowed down some detail around bridge and finalising my portholes... these haven't quite worked as planned so looking at plan B. Seems that I pick up something each time I look at it which needs doing before I can the thing I planned!!!!!!

Progress to date has been a tad slow but now have narrowed down camouflage colours that look right to me based on the three images I have and Alan Ravens book. Turrets starting to come together with X and Y basically complete and detail being added. Bridge coming together as is aft superstructure. Catapult to complete, and about to start crane. Port side windows all installed which allowed for final run of paint before light overspray and weathering.

Yep, have three rail brass railing posts from Billings, not perfect as area railing goes through should be round not squarish like the ones I have but they will work. Have some anchor chain I got a jeweler friend to get me which is perfect in scale and style with the centre spacer separating each eyelet at each end.... bit expensive as it is silver!!! Eyeblt tie downs to be fitted every where but will start these once the planks are in place on the deck along with bollards, ready lockers, and mushroom vents etc. A looooong way to go yet.

You could always get the parts you need 3D printed, I add bits occasionally that I've printed.

I have .5 quads, M21 torpedo tubes, watertight doors and armoured windows, as well as 4' deck guns 3 D printed, from here on I need to produce most myself... partly budget and partly accepting it would be hard to claim as "I built it myself" if I relied purely on 3D. You are right I can get the vents small boats carly floats etc. etc. etc. but have decided these will be hand made.

So here we are at the present with stbd side painted all over spray wash with thinned grey to tone things down. The list of things to still do grows rather than diminishes....uuuurgh. deck boats, carlys, etc. etc. etc. planking will start soon, along with final detail on turrets (rest of turret stops under the barrels) though forward vent doors in place and also aft doors, need to add ladders to each turret (left rear side) slowly slowly catchy monkey as they say!!!

An update on progress, Lots of little things but including planking underway, anchor capstans two complete one under construction, eyelets appearing everywhere!!!!. Davit crane near bridge on one side. Turrets almost complete bar ladders and vents at back and turret locks? on front of three turrets still to do. Ladders etc. and all piping and vents complete on funnel. Catapult needs a few more things, will do for now but will re build later now I have more accurate drawings. Crane aft is underway. Gunnery directors completed and temporarily installed. Some carley floats appearing thanks to a colleague giving me a few to start with which I am adding detail to. Also some of the smaller boats, including hull for motorboat made detail and cabins to be added, Dinghys as small kits needing planking and decent internal detailing but a good base to work with and inexpensive. Awaiting more planking to arrive.... severely underestimated how much was needed!!!!!

WARNING..... Never try to make a list of what still needs to be done!!!!!! Amazonian forest won't cope with deforestation due to paper requirements!!! and subsequent depression at how little progress you've made!
