We road-tripped through the California and Arizona deserts last year. I'm not sure what it is but I really love the place, even with the stifling heat.

Grant another beauty. I really like the colours. They remind me of the country around Mt Isa where I used to live. This is going to be great.

Cheers! I've finished the basic painting. I gave the rocks a further red ochre wash which makes them look a bit more substantial. These pics look a bit washed out and orange, it is a bit darker in person. Eventually this will have lots of static grass, bushes and pine trees, so it won't look so much like a Martian landscape.

I'm now probably going to split this up into four sections and complete them individually. The whole thing is too much to work on at once.

Started the ballasting. This is a simultaneously frustrating and satisfying job. The end result of ballasted track looks great, but it takes a huge amount of patience to get right. :S

This sound loco arrived this morning. I ordered it last Monday from a shop in Brooklyn NY. :woohoo: I'll weather this soon and get some appropriate rolling stock.

The locomotive is a Bachmann Spectrum Baldwin 4-4-0. I've been suspicious of Bachmann in the past, but took a gamble on this. It ended up being $250 nzd delivered. I've seen similar locos double that price in stores here. :S Got it running this afternoon. Runs very well. The sound gives me a big grin.

I'll hopefully post some videos once I have the scenery more complete. This morning I started on the grass. This is a first layer of fine turf and then a blend of two colours of static grass applied with my trusty homemade applicator. :)

I got some Mini-natur grass tufts in various colours for the bushes this time. They are quite fine and give a nice impression. These might interest diorama modelers. :)

Started gluing on the trees and bushes to the forest scene. There will be a lot more trees on this. The thing I want to learn on my next layout is how to make my own convincing pine trees.

More to come! Grant.

And it's a pretty small layout. I'm amazed by the huge layouts that some Americans build. Here's one more pic. I've finished for today. I think I have to restock with trees.

Cheers. The layout now needs some minor surgery. The past couple of very hot days in Christchurch (probably well into the mid 30s in the garage) has made the rails expand and has buckled one of the switches. I didn't leave enough gap between the rails on that side. Luckily it happened in an area I haven't ballasted yet. Amazing that the rail expands that much actually. :pinch:

It's an easy fix though. Here's a bit more progress btw. More ballasting, surfacing and foliage on the front.
