N scale Kato SD40-2 BNSF #7023 was created by steve4
while I was looking for more pictures online to paint another four BN/BNSF patched green SD40-2 I found this one, BNSF #7023 with a rather unusual longhood. the engine is a SD40-2 which received after a wreck damage a new longhood, it seems there was a SD45 available at the time and so ended the SD45 longhood on the SD40-2...

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=376825

...that was too tempting and I decided to build one in N scale. I started with a Kato mid production SD40-2 and an old Kato SD45 shell. after some cuts and some welding with Tenax 7R the shell was ready for a first test fit.

next step is to get rid of these ugly fans Kato did mold on the SD45 shell, I will replace them with the fans from the left overs of the SD40-2 shell...

these are the fans from the SD40-2 shell...

I filed them flat and have had to be carefull to keep the fan ring also on the fan...
...didn't go well first so I have had to start again

that is better, Dynamic Brake and Radiator Fans done...

these ugly molded on fans have to go, they look too cheesy...

drilled them out with a x-acto knife and removed the rings with a chisel...

...now that looks much better and is closer to the prototype

next step is to fill in the brake wheel and put another door in place...

the brake wheel is at the right place for the SD45 but wrong for the SD40-2. I did cover the opening with styrene, filed off the little door, put some putty on, filed the whole surface smooth, drilled two holes so the glue has a way to escape and glued an etched door from BLMA in place...

next step was the exhaust stack, the prototype got the one from the SD45 mounted (I did it the same way as with the fans on the model)...

the numberboards on the old Kato SD45 shell are a bit small (and I lost the original glass insert anyway) so I closed them with some styrene and can now with the size of the numbers a bit cheat to make the numberboards a bit bigger...

put everything back together for the next foto shoot...

next step is the cab, the roof has to be worked on to get rid of the holes, gaps and air lines and then all the needed detail parts will be put on the model...

Nice going, is that the same one you posted in the finished section on DD?

You must have very nimble fingers working in N Scale!

thanks, no this is a new one, the ones posted on the DD (and here as well) are SD40-2 with normal radiators, this one has flared radiators and that is what makes #7023 special...

Oh, OK - I obviously missed that! I'm not too well versed in the finer points of Loco spotting :D

The flared radiators look pretty cool. Was annoyed a couple of weeks ago, I missed out on getting an Athearn tunnel motor Sd40 for a son off TM

so that's how you do the handrails! :D

Which paint are you using for the green? It looks quite bright under those lights. Looks like the walkways are some sort of non-slip material?

for any plastic handrails I am using water based Badger model flex or Polly Scale paint but I mix 50% of Parma Faskolor Faskoat (color less) with it. Faskolor is a flexible, non toxic, water based paint for Lexan Model Car Bodies and other surfaces. that keeps the paint flexible and it will not crack and peel off...

the green is a mix between Badger BN green and Polly Scale BN green to lighten it up a bit, I don't paint my models in the color they left the paint shop, I always paint them already a bit weathered and sun bleached. the black the same, a mix between PS engine black and PS CP Rail gray to give it an already weathered look. needs less weathering after the whole model is decaled... look at the four BN/BNSF models, they are all painted in different shades of BN green. but none of them looks wrong. if you compare them with pictures of the real thing. none looks the same after years in service...

the Kato walkways are not flat that is right, they have a diamond plate pattern...

I think I mentioned somewhere along the line that I have the Floquil BN green which looks quite light; I'm going to try mixing in some Humbrol green into it and see what happens. The plan is to pre-shade then postshade it.

Now that I have the BN decals, I've just realised I've jumped the gun and glued the front grabs in ahead of the diagonal stripes. Nuts... havta find a way around that! :D
