My current modelling theme fits firmly in this category, the last ten years of Rhodesia (the 1970s). During this period mines were the primary threat to the ground movement of Rhodesian security forces. This combined with a UN embargo on the purchase of military equipment lead to them producing some pretty amazing home grown mine and ambush protected vehicles. Unfortunately modelling this theme means it almost totally a scratchbuild route. Also detailed information is hard to come by so the majority on my builds are only based on photos and basic measurements. The models are 1:35th scale.
A Mine Protected Mortar Carrier based on a Unimog chassis. The model uses the chassis of the Revell Unimog. On the right is a Rodef 25, the Rhodesian tile for a Unimog 1100 chassis. The model uses the cab and chassis of a diecast (1:32 scale ) Unimog by a German company called Weise-toys. And in the background is a Land Rover based Cougar armoured rail trolley. There is aTamiya Land Rover axle in there somewhere, the rest is plastic card. Edit reposting photos as I find the originals after the originals were Photobucketeted.
Approaching the mine crater is a Pooky mine detection vehicle which used VW Combi axles and motor. In the background is the Rodef 25 and a Rodef 75 Horse Carrying Vehicle which uses the Zvezda MB L4500A chassis.
This is a Leopard which was produced for civilian and govenment department use in areas with a high mine threat. It was designed by the same person as the Pooky. In common with the Pooky model it has an Azimut VW engine. The wheels are off a Kubelwagen.
Finally one of the few kits that are suitable is the T55 which Rhodesia had eight of obtained from South Africa. It is the Tamiya kitset.
The whole thing is rather large for a single photo. It has grown since this aerial photo was taken. It is a diorama with a running railway with modern Rhodesian armoured trains linking all the scenes together.

Received this on New Rhodesian group I'm on 'I'd certainly hope that you will find it accurate, dcrfan - and given that I involved the RLI Regimental Association, who saw and agreed the manuscript before publication, it certainly should be ' They have already received their advance copies so publication date should be good unlike some other Rhodesian subject books I'm waiting on.
Latest built nearly completed is a semi trailer command post. The trailer started life as a horse carrier for the Greys Scouts but it turned out to be too heavy for the mine proofed tractor unit. The tractor is now receiving it's final details as I start next project, an armoured Unimog assembled by the Rhodesian SAS.
Latest 'mad max' project, a Tusker which was manufactured for the Rhodesian civilian market based on the military Rhino. It was made on both short and long wheel base Land Rover chassis and featured 3, 4 and 5 seaters. The model is a T3 with a side door and 500 kg load deck.
Based on Italeri Land Rover it a bit of a mixed media conversion - plastic card, brass roll bars and mesh floor and aluminium mesh. Once the model has been painted, bullet tumbler mesh will be rapped around most of the body.
The Tuskers has paint, glass and headlights added.
I realised I have not posted pictures of armoured Rodef 25 (aka Unimog 416) with non mine protected body fabricated by Rh SAS. Take one 1/35th Revell Unimog, after market resin DEF Models wheels, Zvezda 14.5mm MG and plastic card; shake well and voila.
Batching it for a few days so lots of modelling time. Tonight I added the aluminum mesh bullet tumblers to the roll bars. A packet of Little-Lenses arrived from the UK yesterday so side lights and indicators are next on the list followed by a canvas roof.
Latest project is building three Eland 90 mm armoured cars to represent the correct load on the Eland transporter. The Eland in the picture below were painted in non Rhodesian Army pseudo colours for an external operation.
Not what I may have placed on the trailer
The project is modifying an Azimuth AML 90 into the Rhodesian version which will be on the rear of the trailer uncovered as it is about to be unloaded and two covered with tarpaulins which I am building with just enough detail to give all the right bumps when covered with tarpaulins.
All three will be mounted on the correct Dunlop tyres that were fitted to the South African manufactured Elands (the original French AML were shod with Michelins.
