Quad Gun Tractor was created by Andrew.W.
Now for something totally different for me.
Laid down some paint on this today, building it for my father in law, he served in the artillery regiment in Korea. 162 battery, No 4 gun, Dog Troop.

I am a keen modeler, I normally build 1/24th scale cars, muscle, street and drag. I have well over 100 kits just sitting there waiting to be done. I am a father of 5 with one grandson and a granddaughter on the way. I'm a stay home dad.
If there is anything else you want to know? Just ask. :)

Here are some pics of a Kiwi Quad Gun tractor.

This one is from 162 Battery.

Side View:

Rear View, from NZ history online video.
Note the same number ' NZ 9915 ' is shown on the rear panel on the RH side.

162 Battery Tac sign
...With yellow strip on the bottom.

16 Field Regiment, tac sign. as used on the front of the Quad...

Front view of Kiwi Quad...
44 tac sign on RH side front (no Yellow line on bottom), Commonwealth 1st Division sign. Dark Blue version, (also light blue version, but I have only seen it on the Quads with the White Star, i.e. Before the formation of 1st Commonwealth div.)

Rear Tyre carrier frame and Kiwi stowage frame fitted to the Quads...

Lined up all shiny... no doubt cleaned with Kerosene.

My Models, did not add fitting plates to Angle from on top, as will be covered with stowage.
My little angle plates on the tyre carrier were fitted upside down... need to open my eyes next time... :P

Here is an extract from Kiwi-Armour 5, showing the configuration of 16 Field Regt, 161 bat.
162 battery more or less the same, but C & D troop...
In your case the Quad will be D4.

Cheers Grant, is that a real one in those pics? I thought it was a model lol Father in law has asked for it to be Olive Green which I have done obviously, but wanting to know about the smaller details and colours to paint them, like the diff and the springs, engine and brakes dics etc, oh and seat colours inside. Thanks for the photo references, awesome.

Hi Andrew,
The Quads would have been a deep Bronze Green.
Not sure what paint you use, but Tamiya XF-27 Black Green, seems pretty good, as well as XF-61 Dark Green...
My Jeep was done in Dark Green, and the QL Bedford & my 25pdr's in Black Green.

The chassis, axles, diffs, hubs, wheels, floor pan, pretty much everything would have been painted the same colour.

I have seen pictures of the Engine in Black, Duck Egg Green type colour, as well as the body colour...
The carburettor is aluminium as some other ancillary parts.
The Air intake/filter cover is gloss black.

The Seat squabs are typically shown as a Khaki colour, but seen shades more brownish, but I don't think this is correct.
I would go for Khaki or faded olive drab/light green... or a faded green canvas...

Interior is same as exterior colour.
Steering wheel and gear knob is black Bakelite type material.

...hmmm, what else?

Hey Grant.
Thanks so much for all that info, really helps me out heaps, this kit comes with a figure as well, the uniform Khaki? Which I have, so will just do seats that colour, yeah and as for the Olive green, I was never was happy with the olive green as I felt it did not match the green on this gun the father in law is getting me to fix for him as well.
So I will got for one of the greens you have recommended here, and just paint over what I have done and can use the first coat as a primer lol. The darker green should cover this ok I take it, and yes I just use Tamiya rattle cans.

Cheers Grant, big help.

No problem,
If you can share what markings etc your father in law wants for his Dog Troop quad, I would be very interested to see....

I think the Tamiya 25pdr's come out ok.
So a new coat of paint will do wonders. I have yet to finish mine, but my Limbers are nearly done.
Thanks.

Hey Grant.
Took this pic out of a book father in law had, pretty sure it's the middle one, just need to put on decal paper so I can use them, going out to his place on weekend, so going to re check everything. So the gun in the pic above is close to the right colour?

Cheers.

Yip, that's correct from what I have seen.
here is a link showing the same.
riv.co.nz/rnza/rf/postww2/16fdk.htm

However on the photo's I have seen such as posted above, the number 44 is not present on the side of the vehicles, but I assume the gun/troop number was used, such as D on the top red section, and 4 on the bottom blue section.
All the '44' signs on the front of the Quads were without any battery colour. i.e. Red & Blue only with number 44.
The Commonwealth sign on the left hand side is typically dark blue with black lettering. (the light blue was seen on the vehicles before the formation of the 1st commonwealth div).
Example:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Commonwealth_Division

AFT make a set you can just add the yellow strip to...
or just paint the colours, and add white lettering later...

The book below says everything had the tac signs, however I only found one picture of a tac sign on a gun, and it did not distinguish which battery, only the #44 for 16 field regt.

Hey me again, was needing to know the colour to paint the beret on the solider that goes into my quad gun tractor please Grant. This is what I have so far. Not looking too bad, just a bit more fiddly to what I am used to building lol

Wow, awesome work there. Very nicely done :) Also, do you know anyone that can print decals out? I will need some made up for the right regiment.
Thanks so much for all your help.

Hi Andrew,
Not sure who can print decals, maybe start another post to get everyone's attention... :P
I need to print some... one day...

For the Figure colour I use the following Vallejo paints:
Beret: 921 - English Uniform
Gaiters: 987 - Medium Grey
Uniform: 887 - Brown Violet
Jacket: 879+941 - Green Brown + Burnt Umber

Best to goggle the colours, as the description is a bit misleading...
