Good Afternoon, I need some advice from anyone with vacform experience. How do you attach resin wings to the vacform fuselage? Do I need to insert some rods? Thanks

Cheers, this is the first vacform I've done, so going at it a bit blind. I've just finished sanding the fuselage, and have dry fitted it. I need to clean up the resin wings, but I'm concerned about the stress on the join without any support. Do I need to use a different glue to bond them together? Any advice much appreciated

A spar joining the wings would take a lot of stress off the fuselage.

Yes a central spar of brass or aluminum tube that goes right through the fuselage and in to each wing would be the best way, then add CA to hold it all in place.

What I would do is add some thick plasticard ribs to reinforce the inside of each vac wing root. Once these have been attached I would lightly spot-tack on one of the resin wings to its wing root with superglue. Drill two holes from inside the wing root (one at 20% distance from the wing leading edge and one at 70% distance) so the drill goes through the resin wing airfoil section and then snap off the wing from the wing root. Put two brass or aluminium rods or tubes through the holes in the wing root and line them up paralell to the other wing root and drill holes in the other wing root. You can then lightly tack on the other wing to the root you just drilled and then drill through the airfoil section of the other resin wing. This gives you alignment for the spars and wings so you can fit them later in your build sequence. Once your fuselage is finished you will be able to insert your two rod/tube wing spars through the pre-drilled wing root sections to which you will be able to attach the wings in perfect alignment.

By the looks of it your F-27 is 1-144 scale so the loading weight is not going to be too great, so you'll be able to gauge what thickness of spar you need.

Thanks for the advice, it went together fairly well, this one is finally off the bench. Maybe a quick tidy up the nose, but im calling it done. Trying to clear these airliners to start my GB.

Wow great job on awful vacform (very brave) and wow what a great scheme that brings back memories of my late teens when i was gliding at NZPP and this aircraft was always there (possibly based there) such a great scheme.

Thanks Flyingkiwi, I flew as a passenger on this aircraft sometime in the late 80s when Mount Cook leased it. The vacform certainly was a new experience.

Thanks Viperbuilder for the tips on the wings, it worked really well.

The anti glare shield decal is a bit too thick and short. Ill probably remove it and paint it on later.
