I've been itching to build but I don't really have the space for any big 1/32 builds unless I get rid of some of my completed models, and unfortunately I don't really have the time either given that I will be working and travelling pretty solidly for the next year. So my thought is that I'm going to start building the 1/72 kits I have in the stash. I have most of Airfix's new 1/72 WWII kits and bunch of other brands. A few years ago I thought of trying to build all of the main WWII fighters and bombers in 1/72. Maybe I'll give that a go. If so, I'll post all my progress in here.
First up, Airfix's 1/72 P-51d in the Redtails scheme Lollipoop:
The kit is excellent. Fit and engineering is generally very good (apart from some slight shape problems with the forward canopy which required a bit of filler). The fit on the wing to fuselage is very nice indeed. I've painted the cockpit, finished assembly, primed it in black and given it a coat of Vellejo Metal Colour Aluminium which is my go to aluminium.Tomorrow I'll mask it up ready for the fuselage colours. More soon.
The P-51 is nearly done. I changed the scheme to something simpler than the box scheme. Decals next, and then a tiny bit of weathering to finish it. The undercarriage aren't flimsy but they are a little crooked (hence the brace).

I built the Bf109 kit last year. It went together nicely. I think if I was to do another I'd consider leaving the stencils off - or at least most of them. There were dozens of them and they stood out too much. I ended up doing a dusty/dirty overspray to try and blend them in and make them less apparent.
I think I'll count the Hurricane as done then too now that you have suggested it. Thanks for the advice on the 109. I've actually got to the point where I am very relaxed about leaving stencils off.

Malcolm, do you have this book? I'd like to have a look at a copy. I'd imagine it's out of print. I'm going to go with that list though. There are a few notable exceptions, but when I tried drawing up my own list it quickly ballooned to about 70 aircraft.
Nice list. You could take a few weeks off you build time if you only make one DO-17 30,36. Im sure you could knock a few fighters out pretty quickly, one a week maybe? the bombers would be the time consuming bit

Good spotting. I'll slot something else in there. There is no lack of choice.
I'm going to give this a go I reckon. I'm not taking it too seriously though.
Funny thing is when I read DO-17 twice I thought it mean't you were going to do the inline engine and radial engined variants. Both nice looking aircraft imho. Anyway that's quite a list there Grant, and so long as you don't distract yourself with variants (like 109's or Spit's) you'll be done in no time!
If only I could build kits at the pace I buy kits!

Falco is cool...there is (was?) one in the BoB Hall at the RAF Museum at Hendon before it was cleared out for renovation (both the hall and the aircraft, I believe)
What is the best kit in 1/72.....those ones in the stash appear a bit dated perhaps?
Back on to this silly plan. This build was a bit of a pain. The canopy doesn't really fit, and the small parts are very small and the plastic is brittle, meaning lots of annoying breakages. Still, it's done and I can cross it off the list.
Looks good. I'm a little surprised and disappointed to read this modern tooled Airfix kit has canopy fit issues, but thanks for putting this out there Grant. I'll put a note in with my kit to be on lookout for fit related troubles, and to handle with care!

The problem is with the back part of the canopy as you can maybe see in the pics. It's too small. It would not be such a problem if you wanted the canopy open, but with the canopy closed there is a gap unless it is pressed down as it is in the pics. Honestly If I had taken more time and care I could have found a work around, but for whatever reason I was inattentive when I built that bit and only really noticed the extent of the problem later.
