Hi all,
It’s been a while. I’ve been working on 1/43 kits lately, so it was time for a quick build, in a larger scale. I’ve had this kit in the stash for a while. It was one of the original issues, circa 2011, and Fujimi had made a spelling mistake on the decal sheet....”Safty Car”. I was fortunate enough to track down a correction sheet with the correct Safety spelling.
As I was going for a speed build (anything quicker than a month or two is fast for me!) I decided to play around a with a few techniques. Although it’s a curb side kit, there was a bit of detail painting to do on the underside of the chassis. Instead of airbrushing and brush painting, I used paint markers on the bare black plastic, and for the brake calipers. The brake discs and wheels had a satin plating, so I gave it a bit of a wash with Tamiya Panel Line Wash and left it at that. The airbrush came out for the body, which was a lovely moulding. Very smooth and shiny with well concealed mould-join lines. After a small amount of attention to these with some sanding sponges, I hit the body with Mr Color 8 Silver Met without a primer. It went down lovely and smooth (heavily thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner), and although it looked very glossy after a wet coat, it dried to a satin finish. I gave it a day or so to dry whilst I cleaned up the other parts, then hit it with some Mr Color UV Cut Clear, decanted from a spray can. This time I got a great glossy finish that dried rock hard. It also darkened the silver just a little, and I think the final result matches Mercedes silver pretty well. Whilst the airbrush was out, I sprayed the interior German Grey, then semi gloss and gloss back for the remaining parts. The kit came with a photoetch sheet of grille mesh and badge details, and a sprue of warning light bits for the roof.
In general, the kit went together really nicely. The head and tail light buckets fitted securely from the back, with locating tabs, and the clear covers fitted from the front. I dunked all the clear parts in a bath of Future tinted with green food colouring (which has turned yellow with time) and it improved the finish of the windows, without changing the colour noticeably.
The decals went down ok with some setting solution, then it was just a matter of fitting the final detail bits....mirrors, windscreen wipers, badging etc.
I’m pleased with the result. The photos don’t really show the gloss very well, but I’ll take some more when I get a chance. So here it is....2010 F1 Season Safety/Pace Car.

Thanks Gary....my cheating exposed here a bit as they are supposed to be carbon brakes (I think), so should have been a metallic grey....bah, they look ok as-is!

Doubles as a spoiler for downforce and a speed brake for extra drag apparently. I’ve seen it in action at the Melbourne F1 GP and it sounds pretty mean. Looks dead slow in comparison to the F1 Cars, but very quick for a road car.
