Looking good Kane. You are at a similar stage I am with this kit. From memory, all Bandai star wars kits have the issue with enamels washes reacting with the plastic, best way to go is glue everything you can and then use a decent primer. If you use an enamel wash sparingly you can normally get away with it (in small sections) but you'll run into issues if you use them liberally.

Cheers guys and thanks G2. I havent decided how I will weather yet but I did think about oils. I will definitely be keeping enamels to a minimum then :)

I did toy with the idea of having the viewport light up from inside but have neither the skill or ability to pull it off.

I love these kits. Will be spending more time keeping up with the group, might help kick my model mojo into gear.

Looks like a good build though :)

Cheers guys. Wow 2 days in a row I got some bench time. I guess that's me until next year :D

File Attachment:

Started putting some of the legs together. If you enjoy building, you will love this kit. Some bloody talented engineers over at Bandai for sure.

File Attachment:

And the detail is gorgeous. The plastic sands well too. I'm finding myself thinking about how I will paint this as I assemble it, such as if I will give the feet a metallic look, not that anyone will see them.

File Attachment:

And 2 feet and parts of 2 legs done, and I need to get to bed before midnight for once.

They certainly think about how it goes together properly. But then a lot of that comes from them basically being a snap-tite kit. The trouble with glueing (like I do with the Bandai kits) is trying to get the glue where you need it and not in the moving joints.

File Attachment:

So a bit of work over the weekend saw the first set of legs mostly complete. While a lot of parts, it doesn't really take long once you're in the zone

File Attachment:

And no problem standing up either. The only part I glued was the covers over the thin sides of the legs.

File Attachment:

One more short night session had the 2nd set done. This mostly cleared out 2 sprues.

File Attachment:

Then it was on to the undersides of the body.

File Attachment:

This is another 2 spues worth of parts. The detail is just phenomenal.

File Attachment:

Like the Millenium falcon, you come across parts that are clearly from other model kits. This kit uses a couple of what to me look clearly like Harrier engines.

File Attachment:

Everything goes together a dream. I am starting to think how I will paint this though. With such detail, some parts may not get a good coat if I paint it all assembled.

File Attachment:

The underside all taken care of and looking amazing. Shame you dont see a lot of this detail in the movie. Im not too sure what to do about the seam around the 2 harrier engines, although it looks much more noticeable in photos than in reality.

File Attachment:

Next was the insides of the body. Most of this wont be seen but it gives you the option of having the service doors open.

File Attachment:

And put together. There's a litte bit of wiggle between the inner and outer parts. I may glue it but not until I have decided what to do with the access covers. I may see if they can be removed and put back on at will.

Hopefully one more session and I will be ready to start painting.

File Attachment:

I wasnt going to put these plates on the back, but I can get the paint in there with them on, as long as I leave the 2 halves of the body separate while painting.

File Attachment:

I also glued in the panels you can leave open. Shame to hide all that detail. I did have delusions of grandeur about making a hangar having multiple AT-ATs in differeing states of readiness, and then I realised my (lack of) skill level.

File Attachment:

The base that comes with this is fairly simple, but I'll use it and add white flocking powder to simulate snow.

File Attachment:

File Attachment:

File Attachment:

So now all the parts are done and ready for primer, then paint. I wont be doing that until Friday at the earliest. The cave is right below where baby sleeps, so I can only spray during the day. Looking forward to weathering this most of all. Not heavily, but some nice subtle weathering.

Not much goes together this well. Be cool to compare to the MPC kit though.

Looking good, my main complaint with the kit was that because the legs etc are so articulated it can be tricky to get it to stand.
Which is why mine is head down in the snow :-)

I was able to weather with enamels but i made sure that there was plenty of stuff (primer, shading, colour coat and clear coat) over it before I did and then all you have to watch for is it seeping into a join somewhere, which still wont be an issue unless the parts move or are a really tight fit and pressure the plastic.

Stand aside caffine, this is a job for alcohol.

Cheers Webby. I saw a video on Youtube yesterday where the guy put magnets in 3 of the feet and then more drilled into the base. Was a great solution and was easy to remove from the base then just snapped back into place.

Cheers Yak :)

I finish early on Fridays so i pulled out my .4mm Airbrush, and the Stynylrez and went to work spraying.

File Attachment:

The stynylrez was fine. Using the black as the base, and while the pigments had separated, they normally do anyway. A shake up and it was sweet, as I thought i may need to thin it.

File Attachment:

I should have cleaned the booth before hand, but oh well. It hasnt been used in over a year.

File Attachment:

I just started with some dusty coats, to see how the primer sprayed, how the airbrush worked, and how crap I had become. All worked fine, even me.

File Attachment:

To prime the legs, I sprayed the bases of them all. Given the warm weather I figured it would dry to the touch in a few minutes and I could hold the base while I sprayed the rest.

File Attachment:

Yup, worked a treat.

File Attachment:

File Attachment:

I forgot these covers for the legs so I sprayed them. Great thing about stynylrez is you can lay it down thick, it can spit and still self level. It's idiot (me) proof.

File Attachment:

Final chance to get some stuff done today so I started by getting the legs in a stance I liked.

File Attachment:

Then I started the the paint work using XF-19 light gray

File Attachment:

This is the part I really enjoy, modulating the spray to get different tonal effects. Im not great but I still enjoy it.

File Attachment:

For me this is when it starts telling a story.

File Attachment:

While it was drying i used some white flocking powder and PVA and covered the base that comes with the model.

File Attachment:

Then this afternoon I got back and covered everything with XF86 flat clear. I have thinned everything with Mr Color leveling thinner. I may not have let the paint dry long enough cause I think in some parts the clear is reacting with the paint underneath. I wont get back to it anyway until late in the week so we shall see then.

Looking really good. The guys who did all the Gerry Anderson stuff set the bar for kit bashing with Airfix kits and everyone followed suit. I really like the shading you've added to everything so far.

File Attachment:

Last night I got some time downstairs and went to work putting the kit together starting with the head and neck to the lower body.

File Attachment:

Then i attached the upper body. I expected some play in the fit. Don't know why, it's Bandai. It fits perfectly.

File Attachment:

File Attachment:

I wanted to add some weathering to the open panel at the top so masked it off and got out my makeup Tamiya weathering stuff.

File Attachment:

I didn't think it was having much of a difference until I took the tape off. A bit of clean up needed but I'm happy with the result.

Thanks all, I appreciate the comments.

File Attachment:

I decided to get out my oils for weathering the main body. I just have cheap ones but they seem to work fine. This is only the 2nd time i have used oils, but for anyone thinking about it, they aren't as scary as I thought when I first used them.

File Attachment:

The rear section had its first play. I was a bit nervous knowing Bandai's ability to crumble when exposed to certain chemicals.

File Attachment:

If you're thinking of doing something like this I am no expert, but its basically splotching small bits of oils on, and streaking down the direction you want the weather stains to go with a brush and a little bit of turps or oudorless thinners.

File Attachment:

And whalla.... you start getting the effect, if you have too much, keep brushing, of you go too far, just add a little more. Easy (ish) :)

File Attachment:

This is midway through the process, nice streaks but need to be a bit muted.

Weathering is coming along nicely Kane! I used oils on the T-34 and didn't mind them at all! rather liked the subtle effects they can give. Its easy to freak out a little when you first put them on because they stand out like dogs balls but come good when you go through the whole process. Good Work!;)
