Airfix 1/600 HMNZS Waikato conversion was created by Craig Sargent
Been working on this on and off for many years. Recently someone pointed me towards an excellent set available form Shapeways to detail this kit, as well as some new photo-etch from Atlantic Models. So this is now back on the bench. Still a way to go, but at least the detail sets help with a lot.

The 3D printed set from Shapeways

The photoetch from Atlantic

I've added the two main masts, bridge, 4.5in turret, life raft arrays, and the forward director, along with it's etch platform. You can see all of the work done to correct this kit and turn it into the Waikato from the original Leander.

The 3D printed Wasp, awaiting all of the photo-etch

I'm building this for my brother who served on the Waikato for many years, before she was retired.

Watching this!! I also served on The Mighty Waikato! I did all my overseas deployments on her! She had a great soul!

Only did 1 weeks sea time on Waikato, we were running locked stbd shaft, due to a defect. Max rpm port back across the Tasman.

A gunner had appendicitis so we picked up an Orion one morning before sunrise. Two Iroquois staged out of Whangarei waiting for the mighty Wai to come into range then we're guided in by the P-3. One hovered over the flight deck and the stretcher was winched up.

First week at sea. Not every deployment was going to be as memorable.

Keep us posted Craig,

I started building models, then I was collecting more than I built. Now I'm more of an archivist.

It is extremely cool that you are building a ship multiple people here served on, plus your brother. Much respect!

On the flipside of that you had better get it right ;)

I have no problem whatsoever for anyone to offer help to ensure I get it right. It's just as important for me. In fact, if anyone has any good detail pics, they would be very welcome. Very hard to find good pics. Especially the aft deck area behind the Wasp pad and the area between the SeaCat launcher and rear mast.

There is a good story about the Seaking, Googlefu HMNZS Waikato Seaking Capt Ian Bradley, should get you the guts of the story.

There was a biography of him released last year. A big colourful character with all the things that type of personality entails.

The real fun bit, besides the rigging, is going to be putting all of the figures in place...

Very cool!

We did a scuba dive on her on our way back from the Poor Knights when I did my AOW. We descended onto her helicopter deck and then swam along part of her port side. Here's a photo of me on that day... glad we used drysuits!

Cool stuff. The Waikato is a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. Drank plenty on board that ship on a couple of visits it had in Wellington during the early '80s. I got introduced to rum stored in the freezer and never looked back. ;) Looking forward to seeing how this build turns out. It would be great to be able to get one in 1-350 scale.

Corran is correct. John D's HMNZS Southland (seen below at the Nats) and his just finished HMNZS Canterbury (he has just posted on Facebook) are both from the Atlantic Models 1/350 Leander class frigate kit. It was John who put me on to the Atlantic Models photo etch for the Airfix Leander.

I saw John's Canterbury when I was in the shop a couple of weeks ago, he's done a lovely job of that and the Southland.

Lets hope someone (Fleetline? Showcase?) bring out an Anzac in 1/350.

From memory I think it was around the 24m mark.

Last time I dived there we found whale bones in Riko Riko cave. Apparently a dead one had washed in there a few weeks earlier and all the other sea life has already eaten most of it. I'll have to dig out the video I took of my dive buddy examining one of the vertebrae.

Atlantic Models 1-350 scale Leander Class is £123.50 plus post (ouch!). I'll sit on that one and have a long think before indulging thanks.

If they leave the EU the £££££ will drop and it'll be cheaper just watch the exchange rate up until the referendum.

Don't worry about that, I have one eye on the GBP at the moment as it is nudging .50. When the GBP drops like this I start thinking of renewing magazine subscriptions as well as acquiring modeller's candy. ;)
