I am almost at the end of building a full radio control model in 1:24th scale using a GRP hull and the rest is scratch and some pre made casting for suppliers in the uk
I have started this thread so not to confuse or mess up the thraed for the 1:35th scale waterline model by Maarten!.
I will start from the beginning! GRP hull is from Sirmar here in the UK
My model is 39inch long and 10inch beam she a big and heavy model. It was a build I had knocking around in my head for at least 10 urs but got pushed back each time by a Coastal Forces craft of one sort or another. So 2012 I decided to purchase a grp hull and plan and go for it!! The plan can in :32/35 scale so I just had it enlarged to :24 scale to suit the lenght of the hull. The wheel house is composite plastic card using 1mm to bulid the basic shell then clad in 20thou V groove plastic card to give the panel effect! All the fittings I made one master the cast the rest! As for the paint job, all colours are from White Ensign Models here in the UK! They are for Norwegian waters with a little license on the scheme!
here is some of the mine sweeping gear i made from drawing from Germany!
I decided to leave the Depth Charges off at the moment as im not that happy with how they turned out!
As there was so many built and little photos on the net i took it on myself to model her with 2 off 20mm 4 barrel Vierlings for Anti Aircraft use along with the mine sweeping.
The AA came from "battlecrafts.co.uk" They make resin and W/M fittings in most scale for warships!
As for the DC' the carrier does not look correct even the drawing shows one that even does not look correct! I have lots to put on here as all the deck fittings i made one off the made a rubber mould to cast the rest.
Im still a long way off yet with the small bits of detail to finish but it will be that which will make the model look good!
The crew are my own from the E-boat range i used to make, but as the moulds are old and worn i stopped casting then!
1:24th is a popular scale here in the UK as most if not all drawings for the actual boats during the war and after where drawn to 1/2 inch to the foot hence 1:24th scale!
All our MTBs/MGBs and MLs are modeled in this scale!
Whats the popular scale for you guys for this range of models then
I'm also from the UK, I live here now with this bunch of retrobates
I don't really make nautical subjects, when I do I suppose it's mostly 1/350 although I do have a 1/72 Flower Class corvette on the got (for the past 3 years lol)
