Whilst waiting for the L4500A Voyager set to be released, I thought the time is right to make a start on the Hummel :drum:

Not the most exciting first post,as the first stage deals with my least favourite part of the Panzer IV family, the road wheels

Here's a pic to give you an idea of the amount of clean up required for the first step. I haven't included the road wheel hubs (another 18 parts to clean)

I'm currently about halfway through them.

You are a Champion Andrew. I'm watching closely. Cleaning up and painting the wheels is the part I hate the most on these. Are you going to do a forward interior? I have a couple of model shots put away if you need any reference for one. I shall when I get to it.

 Thanks Tony

No interior this time round. I'm trying to keep this as OOB as possible, keeping additions to a minimum. Otherwise I can see myself getting bogged down and it getting shelved in frustration

Some time at the bench has lead to the completion of step one. Something like 78 components to prepare just for the drive sprockets, road wheels, idlers and return rollers. You gotta love Dragon Panzer IV family Smart Kits

I've made a start on step two, so far adding the suspension bump stops, and drive housing detail.

Hopefully after the next session, the suspension should be completed and mounted :cheer:

At a guess I'd say a gas soldering iron?

Time for another update. Limited benchtime today. I've managed to get half of the suspension on. Not without issues  I'll go into more detail in my next post. Let's just say I'd pay 25% more for a Dragon kit, if all the parts fitted together like a Tamiya kit, and came with Tamiya type instructions :hairpull:

Update time :) Though rant first.

For those following this build with the kit in their stash. Please note the Dragon instructions are incorrect in step 2. Either the graphic artist drew the hull upside down by mistake, or Dragon confused themselves as to which side was which. When assembling the suspension bogies, they have mixed up which sides A38 and A39 go on.

Check out the picture below, the red lines indicate the correct side where the parts should be fitted.

I managed to spend a few hours in the model room today. I finished step 2, and moved on to step 3 and step 5 assembling the major components of the upper hull. I've skipped step 4 somewhat, which involves assembling the fenders and attaching tools. This will be my next task before beginning to assemble the howitzer.

It looks like they've got the right parts, but they've not indicated which side each should go on. Both sets are illustrated for the same side. Terrible stuff, and very typical. Mind you, its building up very nicely though.

That's a typical DML instruction that confuses as much as it gives instruction. It could've been worse than that though, it could've been a 3in1 kit...

My wife calls me a curmudgeon. I haven't looked it up but I assume it means "fun loving and free spirited" or some such twaddle. I inform and perform over at www.militarymodels.co.nz and stick my oar in here as well. My passion is WWII 1/35 armour but I'm coming around to liking the odd 1/32 thing...

How different (improved) is this Hummel compared to the Dragon kit of the 90s?

Yeah, being a smart kit, it's far more accurate OOB than the early 90s release.

Not much bench time at the moment for this. We've got the mother-in-law coming next weekend, having to start preparing the house for her arrival

Tell me about it. The worst thing is that the she'll be sleeping on the spare bed in the model room. If I go into the model room while she's here, she looks at me funny, like I shouldn't be in there :drum: At least it's only a couple of nights that she's here

OK, so this one has been on the shelf of shame for a while

Since finishing building the Panther, I've been itching to get gluing again. We've got the North Africa GB due to kick off on Thursday building the LRDG Chevy, and I'm also participating in another GB on a different forum building a StuG Ausf F/8, so didn't really want to start a new kit at the moment. For some strange reason, the Hummel appealed.

I spent most of the evening working on the sFH18 howitzer, I'm using a Griffon replacement barrel. This required drilling a 5mm hole to allow fitting. Spent a good 20 minutes on the floor rescuing a couple of parts from the carpet monster

Here is a couple of pics of where I'm at with the gun

Here is a couple of pics from when I completed the front fenders. I tried uploading these the other night, but kept getting timed out

Update time :)

I got some solid hours at the bench earlier, and have been continuing with this. I've added the superstructure walls, and the various attachments on the insides of those.

The Hummel has a lot of secondary defence weapons, there are 4 MP-40s and 2 Kar 98k rifles in various positions in the fighting compartment. I've only left one MP-40 in place have started scratchbuilding empty holders for the remaining three.

In place

I've left the doors at the rear as open. I've got a diorama in mind for this one, I'll be having the crew around the back of the Hummel sitting on the ground.

Here's a pic of how it currently sits B)

I'm hoping to get construction finished on this by Monday, so I can get into my LRDG truck
