So.. a 'weekender' here from a non-regular aircraft guy.

Building OOB Airfix's 1/48 E4 as 1940 JG53 Famously crashed at Broom Hill, Kent.
Will be building as in-flight and probably mounting on a scenic base of sorts.

Basic start.. built and painted by hand the cockpit, nothing added just paint there, Mig Ammo luftwaffe colours set for the RAL interior.

Working on closing up and cleaning up seams hence the primer mess.

More wing work.. front panels were a giant pain to take off the sprue and ended up with some filler. stupid placement.

So I am running into a problem with the paint scheme. This is the famous 12 of Ernst Poschenrieder which crashed in Kent.

Airfix declare it to be RLM70/71 dark splinter camo with an overspray of RLM02 blobs on the fuselage sides. RLM02 being a fairly light greyish green

The standard view of modellers in the past seem to think it should be RLM 71/02 camo (So very contrasted) with the overspray in RLM70 which would create a completely different look to the wings. The original photos are not that clear to tell the difference I think.

Anyone here got any opinions on the right way round? I kind of think Airfix are probably right as 70/71 dark splinter is a normal luftwaffe standard for that period?
