While I wait for my primer to arrive for the Ju88, I'm going to start on this build.

I intend to use it as a test bed for my current decal project.

Some nice detail in this one.

This bulkhead at the rear of the interior consists of 6 parts. It was a bit fiddly to put together as there are no locating pins.

Construction continues. Pretty fiddly and you definitely need to dry fit. Lovely detail though.

Seat harnesses added using the supplied etch. Just need to finish bending a few more of the belts and then it'll be some time for paint.

There's flash present on a lot of the parts and these annoying ejector pin stubs that need trimming and filling.

Beautiful detail even if it is a pain to trim and fill.

Great Build
FYI One thing I noticed when reading builds on the kit with the online builds is the seat supports

This caption from the modelling news build guide

"You will also notice that I have replaced the seat supports for the main troop seats with brass rod. This is mainly due to Kittyhawk getting this part wrong. They have moulded the seats with not enough supports. The have 3 where there should be 5 across the front. The gunner’s seats are also incorrect. I filled the incorrect holes and added new supports where I thought they should be based on pictures."

Hope this helps

Hi Daneby, thanks for that info. I've also read that comment in that build blog (RAAF UH-1). I've decided to just build it without modifying the seat supports. I did shave a little plastic off the sides of the IP coaming as he suggested, to make sure there are no issues with the canopy fit though. I will also be making a decal to add to the overhead panel in the cockpit that Kitty Hawk have overlooked rather than scratch building a representation though..

The airforce Iriquois had sheets of ply painted grey on the floor of the cabin which I want to represent. So after airbrushing a 50/50 mix of Tamiya flat earth & desert yellow, I moistened the surface with white spirits before applying a wash of AK's winter streaking grime. I let it bleed into the paint and then when it was almost dry, I scrubbed it with a dry cotton bud.

Then I splatted a custom dark brown wash mix by loading up a brush with it, flicking of the excess and then flicking the brush against a tooth pick to achieve this effect;

The above has given me just the effect I was after.

Next will be a layer of hairspray before I apply the top coat of grey and then scrub through in certain areas to impart the wear from crew and troops boots and cargo.

Have just finished drawing up and resizing the interior 'emergency exit' markings. Luckily there are some excellent online reference photos available for the RNZAF Iriquois'.

I sprayed a couple of coats of cheap and nasty hairspray straight from the can and let it dry. Mixed up a batch of FS36231 using Tamiya paints and X-20A thinner (I usually use Tamiya lacq thinner, but the X-20A seems to soften up easier with water). After letting dry whilst cleaning the airbrush, I began the chipping by wetting the entire surface and then used a brush and the end of a toothpick to remove the topcoat. I went for areas of higher traffic. Probably overdone, but I'm happy with the end result.

More washes and weathering to come.

Happy with the sizes of the above decals as well as the overhead console and outer door decals

Join between fuselage and tail looks like it will be a good fit.

Have also begun putting the engine together.

Airbrushed a coat of clear over the cabin floor to prepare it for the next round of weathering and also the instrument panel for decalling.

Have also been painting the seats. I painted a couple of them in different colours to give some differentiation (hard to see much difference in the photo).

Since taking the above photo, I have hand brushed the frames and almost completed painting the seatbelts

Detail painting of belts and buckles completed and matt coat applied. Will leave these for a couple of days before I dirty up the belts with a wash.

This is how I painted the cockpit...

Base coat of NATO black drybrushed with dark grey oil paint

Medium grey wash applied

Excess removed and end result

Finished IP and centre console. Tried applying the decals, but they weren't going to work, so hand painted and weathered in similar way to the floor, except after the medium grey wash, I applied a dark grey wash over the top.

I've also finished the main cabin floor and rear bulkhead.

Engine finished. Basic weathering and nothing more as this will be closed up.

Looking good so far Si, that cokpit and rear cabin look good. Only thing would be maybe the floor, I'm not sure if our ones ever got that badly chipped/marked but perhaps Phil or someone else knowledgeable might be able to chip in?

There you go. It was totally not my intent to suggest Simon repaint it and I have seen photos of some Hueys looking even more beat up than that (although knowing Simon, he is the sort of person to redo it if it doesn't look "right"). An observation more than anything.
But completely agree, looking up to your usual standards so far.
