Knocking back the contrast with some highly thinned dark sea grey, because I've run out of neutral grey and there isn't much difference between the two.

And then the dark green applied.

... blocking in of camo coming next.

Some camo going down

I'm thinning the paint more than usual so I can gradually build up the opacity and not ruin all of the blackbasing work

Finished applying the dark green this morning and have masked the port wing and airbrushed the black green.

Very nice work, seems a lot of work though, could you not of done it with post shading? Still it looks fantastic, a nice sun faded effect, looks the business.

Lol, I've thought the very same thing a fair few times recently. But I'm just having too much fun doing it this way. This blackbasing has given the paintwork more depth than what I've been able to achieve with post shading on other kits too.

I think Simon deserves a medal not only for well executed paint work, but for the time consuming blow by blow (pardon the pun!) account of the entire paint process. Really helpful topic, and even makes me think pre-shading is worth a try. The depth and colour variation in your last photo shows lovely tonal variation. Keep us posted with updates please.

Almost finished the camo on the upper surfaces of the wings and horizontal stabilisers. Going to go over these areas again with XF-27 with a little black to darken the green a little.

The variations are coming through nicely mate...I find its sometimes hard to gauge how much top coat to use without losing the variation in colour. Do you spray an even topcoat or mottle like underneath?

I'm mottling the green on too. I'm going to dilute the darker mix highly so that I can build it up super slowly, hopefully without ruining the effect.

Exactly the result I was hoping for. XF-27:3 + XF-1:1 highly diluted and airbrushed over the straight XF-27 from the previous painting sessions.

Next I will mask in preparation for this same method on the fuselage.

Masked and airbrushed the crosses on the upper wings last night. I just have to touch up the black line on the bottom right of this one;

ID stripe masked and airbrushed;

Exhausts airbrushed with a base mix of Tamiya dark iron and dark grey, followed by a misting of highly diluted red brown and then deck tan. This was followed by the application of AK medium rust pigment mixed with odourless turps which was then worked with a micro brush moistened in turps. This was followed by an application of light rust pigment using the same method.

The results after a matt coat. Still a little more work to come to reduce the overly rusty effect;

Highly diluted dark grey misted over exhausts and then lightened with RAF grey and repeated;

Masking removed and paint polished with wet 8000 grit Micro Mesh;

The surfaces are now smooth enough to apply the decals. I've moved away from applying gloss coats pre decalling. I will apply a gloss coat to seal the decals before weathering though.

Exhausts look great...will you be applying a little pigment to them in the weathering process?

They didn't seem to get too sooty when in service, so I'm going to give them a wash with one of AK's dust washes which gives them a heat stained appearance and maybe give them a light drybrushing with a grey. I'll be keeping it fairly subtle. I will be adding exhaust staining after I've done the panel line washes.

I completed the decals on Saturday and have moved on to the propellers. I finished painting the blades and assembling. Masked off the hubs in prep for painting and last night finished painting the hubs. Big thanks to Tamiya's flexible masking tape for making the making of the spinners so easy.

Last night I added the decals to the gear legs, painted the prop hubs with Vallejo duraluminium and gave the undercarriage doors a wash with AK's winter streaking grime.

I still need to finish painting up some of the undercarriage parts and finishing their assembly before I can install them.

Being crook over the weekend gave me some time to get more done.

Undercarriage assemblies completed and weathering underway with a dark wash. I've given them a coat of Vallejo flat clear which will then receive a highly diluted dirty wash.

I also gave the aircraft a gloss coat of X-22 thinned with Tamiya lacquer retardant thinner, which gives a similar result to the Mr Levelling thinner, to protect the decals in preparation for the weathering to come.
