Got a bit tired of trying to make dioramas work, so decided to glue some plastic. Had this kit sitting around a while and it seems a simple build, and a chance to try something different with the painting.

First up just basic subassemblies.. not doing anything fancy for the interior, just paint.. its almost invisible through the tiny cockpit hole anyway!

The fuselage fit isnt terrible, Ill try to do my best with seams though Im not the expert you guys are!

Very satisfying, isn't it... quick no-nonsense project to clear away the modelling cobwebs. Great choice of kit too, don't see too many IJAAF builds around which is a shame.

Okay first attempts at paint on the main body. Chose this to do an experimental peeling paint over metal thing, and here it is so far:

Paint is Tamiya primer, AK black base, AK aluminium (stinky!) Vallejo modelair IJA grey-green and Olive Drab. AK chipping medium used.

Tricky decision here.. the spinner/prop is allegedly 'field grey' according to finemolds but that looks a bit pants, and doesnt mesh well with either museum jobs or other info I have.. I see mostly red-brown props at least on earlier models, and the occasional metal finished prop. Any thoughts?

Your Oscar is scrubbing up nicely. As for the prop spinner colour, I've have no idea about the correctness of the call out colour but I do have some faith in Finemolds having done some research which is a reflection on the quality of their kits and especially being a Japanese company doing a Japanese subject, I'd hope they got it right. It's that or dig over the internet for a week solid to find a black and white photo that proves it was either grey or red-brown ;)

Hah not wrong, and Finemolds are obviously serious about Japanese history, the instructions contain a large amount of info in Japanese, all of which I cannot read!

maybe what I need to do is find out what the heck field grey means in this context.

Thanks!

Next up is masking an painting the white patches around the tail.. cant use decals for that!

Then bite the bullet and decal up and try to make them look okay.

Decals and more detailing. Changed the spinner to metal as this seems more reliable to source material (and looks a lot better!)

Looking good mate, are you going to fade the red markings?

Thanks guys!

More painting finished, added some detail parts. this is pretty much 'pre-weathering complete' I think.

Maybe 95% done I think.

Still some weathering underside and wheels and needs its antenna. And doubtless other things will come to mind.
