After finishing decalling the AIM-7's, I masked the tips of the AIM-9's and airbrushed them with Tamiya Dark Iron enamel mixed 40/60 with lacquer thinner.

AIM-9's detail painting and decaling complete. Clear coat and pin washes next for these and the AIM-7's.

Was just sitting down to paint the red trim on the undercarriage doors and thought I'd have a look at a few references... Seems that most AC didn't have this red trim. Fine with me, I'll start working out a colour mix for the yellow tail and wing tips instead.

Masked off and sprayed the black.

Let it dry for a few minutes before removing the tape praying none of the black had bled under the tape.

The end result and very happy.

Excellent work on the tail masking and painting. I'd forgotten how bad those kit Sidewinders were.

Starting to look the part now.

Thanks guys. After the tail, I guess the next step will be all of that metal around the tail end, burners and stabilisers. Slightly nervous about this stage, but glad that there is so much variation between one Phantom and another in this area.

Starting to feel a certain sadness that this build is gradually coming to an end. Weathering and final assembly is going to take a bit of time though. Have added a 1/32 F-4C/D to my wish list. Would look cool having one in SEA camo sitting beside this one on the shelf.

Thanks guys.

Just as a reference, the Tamiya colour mix was at a ratio of 10 drops flat yellow to 1 drop orange. To my eye this is pretty spot on.

First stage of weathering. I'm trying to impart a dirty but subtle effect using a wash made up with a mix of approx 50/50 AK Interactive Dark Grey Fading and Light Grey Highlight oils. Rather than wiping excess off with moist cotton buds, I'm using dry buds and sort of dabbing/smearing rather than wiping.

Missiles weathered and given a coat of Alclad light sheen clear. AIM-9s attached to hard points.

That looks great! I have a nasty habit of getting lazy around the bits-that-hang-off point of a build, I'm saving some shots as inspiration (again!)

Thanks guys. Kane, I glued them on with CA for a quick alignment.

Just applied my wash mixture to the undersides. Will remove the excess in about an hour.
