I have a number of Harrier kits on the go (20 Hasegawa 1/48 AV-8Bs of various flavours in various stages of construction or unstarted; but only finished one Monogram and two Hasegawa kits - although one of those was a commission and ended up in the US). I've always wanted to build the Hasegawa boxtop scheme for the CO jet from VMA-231. I have a very good walkaround of this jet, so will put a bit of extra effort in to get it looking right.

With a lot of travel for work of late, I usually throw the kit in my bag, with some tools, for something to do in the evening when I'm away. This model has been to most major cities in NZ in the last month and a half, so progress has been a little glacial. With Nats and Armistice approaching, I need something done, so this is now progressing a little quicker.

Apart from the kit, I am using some spares from an Aires cockpit set from a half started kit I bought off another modeller, a pair of Eduard Brassin AIM-9L Sidewinders, a set of Aires exhausts and a Franken-pilot from the spares box (this one is going to be built in flight, posed as per the boxtop artwork). I also plan to try and simulate the front of the intake compressor spinning as if the engine were running. I'll use a set of TwoBobs decals for the same scheme, as Hasegawa got a few things wrong with their decals.

Will get some pics of where progress is at soon.

I have the exact same kit planned for when I finish my GR.7 (don't know when that will be...) and will also plan on doing the boxtop artwork, it will go nicely with my ch53e...

Electrician finished in the new man cave yesterday so I now have lighting and power. Had my most productive night yet, with 3 sets of full length intakes painted and installed and 3 resin cockpits painted and installed. Guess there was a surge of motivation.

Anyway, still plan to get some pics of this Harrier build up soon - now that I can take them with decent lighting, but I received a care package from the US with something in it that meant a model I have been wanting to get finished for a long time is now the focus again. It's 1/48 and it's also a jet, but one I consider to be one of the most important aircraft of the last 50 years. I am not going to post any in progress pics for the new old project, but as I plan to have it finished in time for the Christchurch IPMS Nationals in October, it has taken precedence on the bench over everything else. As the Nats are before Armistice, and as long as I get in finished in time, it will be on the table at Armistice also.

:) That's the plan. I have not finished anything since the little IDF Spitfire last year. Hoping to have at least 4 done before Armistice.

Very pleased to see this back at the top of your 'pending' pile. Last week I began converting a single Mk82 to GBU-38(?) using a previous article you posted as a 'how to' guide !!

Not ready to show the result just yet !!

Back on the bench as decided time to progress it some more.

Lt Col 'Rita' Hayward is a mix of the body from a Hasegawa Hornet, head/helmet from a Tamiya F-16, and arms from a Hasegawa F-16 resculpted at shoulders elbows and wrists to get the throttle and stick to line up in the correct position and the arms to sit naturally. Need to add detailing now and refine some of the shapes.

Adding some detail to sidewalls taken from Black Box cockpit. Not much will be seen with the pilot in, so just enough detail to add some interest.

'Rita' in the office - adding the controls to the pilots hands makes it easier to get the alignment correct.

Because this is an in-flight model, decided I wanted to try and depict the engine fan blades in motion. I cut a disc from clear sheet the same size as the fan blades, after carefully removing them from the intake piece. The disc was attached to a rod and put in the Dremel and then various silvers and blacks misted on in a circular pattern. The disc was centred on the fan blades using a piece of clear rod, to arrive at this:

Once in place I think the effect is convincing enough.

Down to 6 weeks until the IPMS Nationals in Alexandra and this will be my main entry so has been getting lots of time on the bench. Almost at a point where I'm ready to start painting, and has also been the catalyst for a new 1/48 resin "quick and dirty" resin improvement set from TwoMikes resin, which I mastered and incorporated first pulls of the resin into this kit.

A blast from the past Craig. Good to see this one back on the bench. Will be another show stopper for sure! Are the pe chaff/flare launchers the furball (I think it was furball) ones you mentioned on FB?

Yes they are. Since I posted those images, I have removed them and repositioned so there is some space between them as per pics of the real aircraft.
