New reboxing of Valon 1/48th Islander arrived today. It has a new spruce with turbine engines and lots of EW antennae. It was operated in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles' by British Army Air Corps providing intelligence support to Army and Police. It will be part of diorama with a series of Airfix 1/48 Land Rovers I'm working on. Originally planned to use a Beaver or AAC utility Wessex but both kits are OOP.
Last Nov. the urge came upon one fierce for a 1/48 PBY-5.
Part of the problem arose when a seller sent me the wrong kit, after a mix-up with another buyer. Seller sent me a 1/72 Catalina, so I had to have a wee shufti while it was here.
Oddly, I'd only ever seen Monogram's PBY-5A amphibian kit in the stores. One point, years ago, I had a 1/72 kit I started to convert to flying boat.
Ended up in the -too-hard-basket'.
Fast-forward and I thought about a 1/48th kit.
Quick looksee at Evilbay and, lo! must've been 6-7 Revell-o-gram, in both fits.
And I see the PBY-5. With the lowest starting bid ever.
Fortune favours the prepared.
Wasn't that optimistic yet I put in a max bid, since I'd be at work and miss the end of auction by minutes.
Stone me if I hadn't got her.
US$59.00. Total shipped - NZ$115.
I tell you that because the nearest kit was about US$140-$200.
Happy camper, now. I can build a 6 Sqn in 'XX' codes.
There are two types of aircraft: fighters and targets
On the bench:
Esci A-1H, I.D. Models 1/72 Andover vac, Testors 1/72 Harrier, Hasegawa 1/72 F-15D
