Just got back for 8 days in Japan over New Years. I went to a bunch of shops and they were amazing. The highlights were the Yodobashi stores in Osaka and Kyoto (both by the main stations), B's Hobby in Kyoto near Nishiki market, and Volks and Joshin in Denden town in Osaka. Volks Osaka is much superior to Akihabara Volks in Tokyo. It has classy showroom like floors, one each devoted to Gundam, armour, and aircraft. Great selection of kits and lots of excellent displayed built up models (lots of 1/32, including the new HK Lancaster). Joshin has several floors devoted to models including a Tamiya store taking up one entire floor. I got the below for $85 (tax free/ New Years discount price). It's kit I've been wanting for a while. I would have bought lots more (maybe the 1/12 Jagdpanther) but my luggage was already filled with train stuff. The Joshin model train store is crazy big. It also nice to see the hobby isn't pursued only by strange looking old men as it is in New Zealand. In Japan the hobby is huge (probably bigger than kit modelling) and all ages (and sexes) were there buying stuff. I got several new trains and lots for buildings for the new layout.

Sounds like you covered all the bases Grant. Osaka is my favourite place for model stuff in Japan, although I haven’t been to Shizuoka (yet!)
There is a great model car shop not far from Yodobashi Osaka that specialises in 1/43 kits and parts. I always spent way too much there!
Like you, I find it refreshing to see the enthusiasm for the hobby in Japan.
Cool place to spend the holidays!
Cheers
Tania

Now look I might be a man, old but not all of us look strange (although I must admit most of the blokes who think steam trains are great are, well strange) :P :P

Built the Airfix one as a kid and this has always been one of my favourite sci-fi ships. WhenRichard told me this was available, while we wer in Arizona, decided I had better get one.

Had some new stuff turn up today, won't bother posting the kits but I will share the tools and stuff I got out of Japan for a reasonable price.

The thing I was most interested in getting was something mentioned over on the 1/32 Lancaster FB page, it's a clear setting UV reacting CA type resin that's safe for canopies. I'm hoping it will set something akin to how they repair car windscreens, as I want to use it on the turret glazings on my models.

While I was there I had to get some other bits and bobs just to make it worth the shipping................... :D

I already use sheets of glass for mixing and cutting on but this one want to keep for cutting PE on.

I've got some nice template guides for cutting camouflage patterns, you place tape over the steel sheets and cut using the guides, so I bought this swivel head knife to make life easier and a pack of spare blades.

I thought these little drybrushing brushes would be useful for picking out detail in cockpits.

Last but no means least this rather nice 1mm chisel for getting in those tight spaces and removing sprue gates etc.

I got it all from this place here www.plazajapan.com/ best thing is they didn't charge like a wounded bull for shipping.

Nice one Gary. I have used Plaza Japan for quite a few kits recently, and you are right about postage, very reasonable! The price of the kits are way cheaper too!

I grabbed some of that stuff a couple of years back and have only given it a quick try, it seems better than the "as seen on tv" stuff, and i was probably impatient and didnt follow the instructions so was not amazed by the results, i look forward to seeing it properly tested.

After seeing G1's haul of AK the other week I thought I would give their Air Series a go. So I ordered direct from Spain. Postage wasn't horrible but it is worthwhile putting together a pile so it hurts less(18 Euro)So it could be worth while to group buy if you know anyone else wants some. Arrived today.. So that makes it 9 days..Pretty quick I thought! Well packaged .. Had wee bit of a leak with the thinners and lost maybe 1/8th of the bottle but I can live with that. All for future projects so dunno when I will be using them. Oh.. and they threw in some reading material too. Overall pretty good service. Obviously not the cheapest ..But when there is no NZ supplier...It is what it is..

Any evidence of damage from the leaking thinner or did it just evaporate?

Nabbed this one courtesy of the Mighty Ape overstock clearance sale (yes G1, I used the referral link!), was nearly half price so ended up being within a couple of bucks of the cheapest options on eBay. It is the special JASDF boxing so only has Jap markings, I plan on doing an aussie one with some Caracal decals so only the stencils might be used from the kit.

Dammit - missed that one completely. Small favour to ask. If you aren't using the 4 optional radar signature enhancers (parts F25 x 2 and F26 x 2), can I put my hand out for them?

Another one, the little bandai Blockade Runner and Millennium Falcon, both are pretty small. Was only $30 NZD delivered from Japan.
Quite dinky little kits, have included a pic of each next to a ballpoint pen for scale.

Nabbed these from Plamo.co.nz (thanks Reon!), the falcon was on special and a good price, I thought the VF-1J was the 1/48 version (hasegawa do identical boxings in 1/48 and 1/72) but it was the 1/72 version so will build it up at some point for my son. The CA applicators looked like a good idea so thoguht I would give them a try.

I've just brought another vintage kit. For its age it doesn't look too bad however I was surprised the cabin windows have no glazing. I did a search for after market parts but the only one with S-55/H-19 parts advertised (Swanny Models) is showing nill stock of almost everything so I wonder if they are getting out of the business. I plan to make it a early RN helicopter used during Malayan Emergency. There is a set of decals available which include a pair of RN S-55s from the early 1950s
