Hi folks,

It's that time again, and in fact this would've been earlier but I've been horribly busy in the run-up to Christmas and then got waylaid by the festive season in the usual way...

I'd like very much to invite you to the Scale Models Expo being held in Wellington this year. We're at the Expressions Arts & Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt over the weekend 21-22 April 2018 - the same venue as 2014 and 2016. The Expo will have lots of models to enjoy and it's looking from early bookings and expressions of interest like we'll get a good range of traders from around the country and overseas too.

We are running a public competition much as in 2016 (where it was alongside the Nationals) so you don't have to be an IPMS club member to enter, and we're planning some pretty amazing prizes on which more soon. Modellers can enter any number of models and entry to the show is free to entrants, so if you're coming down bring something for the competitions and get in free :) See the rules (on the website) for full details, but roughly any model can be entered provided it's your own work and hasn't previously placed in a Scale Models Expo public competition.

As usual, details are on our website and the online entry form is open from the get-go.

http://scalemodelswellington.org.nz/expo

I'll be sending this out to model clubs as well as soon as I get past a big deadline next week, but if you could pass the word around I'd really appreciate it.

I know transporting quantities of models can be a nightmare, but we'd love to set table space aside for club/group/individual displays if there is interest. We're keen for you to get involved and will do what we can to help make that happen.

And on a personal note thanks heaps to all the out-of-towners who made it down (and up!) from parts distant in 2016. It was really good to meet some new people and put faces to internet accounts for those that I've met online. Here's hoping we do it again in 2018 :)

If you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

All the best for the New Year!

Will

As long as it doesn't coincide with work travel (Murphy's Law), will be down again this year. Always a good excuse to have a road trip.

Great news, glad you had a good time last time.

I think Craig has the honour of being the first online entrant, that's some impressive self-organisation skill on display :)

Cheers,

Will

Sorry to hear that Harald, hopefully it works out for you in the future.

In other news, I thought potential attendees might like to know about the traders who'll be attending Scale Models Expo in April. We've got a range of excellent stalls from both islands and overseas - including the legendary Wingnut Wings.

See the website for full details, and hope to see you there :)

Don’t panic too much Will. Harald is in the Netherlands, but hope he’ll be back down here one day. His last visit was a little whistle stop.

Flights booked; was planning road trip so limits entries a little now, but will be a good weekend.

Ah yes, that's a bit more of a logistical challenge. Although my sister-in-law and her husband were over from Castricum (NL) a month or so ago so it's definitely possible, maar wel moeilijk :)

I'm currently trying to finish this for the show, but there's so much other stuff to do!

Cheers,

Will

Catricum eh?? belive it por not but thats like 10 minutes from where live... Heemskerk...

But yes its a logistical thing.. and going half way around the world for a week.. not really.. last time it took me a week to get over the onbound jetlag..

but.. I will be in NZ in 202o.. yes I know.. long time.. but.. niet zo moeilijk toch??

Will,
I can't find any way to see what entries I have made, and there is nothing in the registration confirmation emails either. Because I'm now flying down instead of driving, I'm a little more limited on space so need to change what I have entered. Is there an easy way to find this out/change it?

Unfortunately we don't have a database back end for the registrations that you can query - they get recorded as Wordpress feedback and we scrape them just before the show to create the forms. But I can stand in as your query engine :) According to our records you've entered the following:

FV101 Scorpion, QAMR, RNZAC
Tornado IDS, 6 Stormo, Italy, 2013
AV-8B Harrier II+, VMA-231

It's not a big deal if you turn up with less/more/different stuff, we check off pre-entries on the day so if they're absent they don't confuse the judging sheets.

HTH,

Will

We open 10am on Saturday and models need to be registered by noon so we can get judging underway in the afternoon.

If you're around on the Friday you should be able to drop stuff off (maybe check with me or Grant) but you'll still need fill out or pick up your forms and entry pass on the Saturday morning. Lastly it's easiest if you preregister online here - saves time all round.

Just under three weeks to go - always a busy time! Just wanted to pop in here and let you know about a couple of cool things:

1) The very talented John Belcher is coming up from Christchurch and will be demonstrating figure painting on the show floor. I think John's work is amazing and I'm really looking forward to meeting him and seeing it in person:

John's Turkish Army Leader 1821 - 1/9th scale bust.

More about John's work

2) Alan Sannazzaro of The Model Room is bringing a trade stall down, but on top of that will be displaying his huge 1/32 P-51 Mustang Assembly Line diorama. This looks fantastic in pictures and again I'm really excited that we'll get to see it before it goes into the hands of a private collector.

More about Alan's diorama

As always, the latest Expo info is here: Scale Models Expo . Hope to see some of you there!

Cheers,

Will

So its all bar locked in, ill be there sometime Sunday after dropping the wife'n'child off with the sister in law in Tawa
Does anyone know what the shopping/food is like in Upper Hutt if I did end up bringing them over the hill to wander the streets? would they be back in 10 minutes looking bored and angry :-)

Awesome that you can make it :)

Shopping in Upper Hutt is OK but the high street is looking a bit thin these days - closed shops etc. There's a surprisingly big Warehouse if you like the Warehouse.

My daughter and I spent a happy hour wandering around the shops/in the mall when we went to the Lego show last year and ate good sausage rolls in the mall cafe. The high spot of the mall is probably the Lincraft shop - this is an Aussie chain I think that sells craft supplies, fabric, wool etc. and is well worth spending time in if you like that kind of thing.

Last time we were there I bought four yards of rather lush fabric to make this vampire cape for my daughter to wear at Halloween :)

Cheers Will, you said the magic words, warehouse, craft and fabrics. that will keep them entertained for ages (glad they have cheapish hobbies at times like this), if there was a kmart then i could probably leave them both days :-)

Queensgate Shopping Mall is only 10 minutes down SH2. Tons of shopping and big Warehouse too.. Lots of food options and also a movie cinema that they could waste some time in

There's the pool right next door. My kids want to come to the model show, but that will only last about half an hour, so wife is taking them to the pool for a couple of hours of fun while I carry on looking around (and maybe spending money).

I've just had to cancel my hotel bookings, I won't be able to come now as I'm on jury service and I'll be on a case all week. Really sorry to miss, this was looking forward to meeting some of the nice folks in Palmy on Friday night to. :(

I’ve just cancelled all my flights and hotel bookings as well. Had a sudden family emergency, which really needs my full attention at home. It is something that is not going away in a hurry. Gutted to not be able to attend, but family will always take precedence over the hobby.
