Friend of mine is missing the bayonet from his collection of stuff he has with his Jeep. So i grabbed this off hlj, glued it up and took it around and it fits in the real scabbard and even clips on the end of his gun :woohoo: now i'm going have a go at painting it to look realistic and worn to match with all the genuine gear he has   this is going to be a massive test. few shots of it. last two where its at with some base colours on.

I've got a real one of those, that looks pretty good.

I've seen a couple of the grenade kits on TM over the years, they come up every so often. I've often thought the stick grenade would look pretty cool in my model cabinet.

All the M8A1 scabbards I have seen are a light shade of olive green fibreglass(?), and the metal around the top is a grey finish, rather than a metallic one, but they probably very from one manufacturer to another.

Yeah Jim has another Bayonet not sure the model and the scabbard is like you described but it has the light olive green over top of another darker green the lighter green is chipped and scraped revealing the darker green and the metal which has a dirty brown look to it. the metal of the bayonet has this look as well. So i think i'll try dirty the metal up with a few light coats of black and brown heavily thinned down to a tinted clear coat stage and see what it turns out like.

Been putting this one off because i have no idea how to achieve the look i'm after but today i just went for it and i'm pretty happy where i have got it to, just need to let it dry a few days and i'll put a light flat coat on to seal it up and need to get the second green on the scabbard and chipped up and i can hopefully hand it over before he heads overseas.

That looks very much like steel, the effect is very convincing.

The handgrips on the real thing are quite glossy black plastic.

Classic case of should have done some research first. Instead i just did what i was told they were. I took it around to show him what i was up to and that it was the wrong mark for what he wants and that i can repaint it correctly for him but he loved it and already knew it was the wrong one and that he asked for it to be paint like an earlier m3 or m4. He is going to wrap the handle in leather and keep it in his real scabbard/sheath.

Thanks mate thats a big compliment. As inaccurate as it turns out i've painted it i'm really happy with it and i'm thinking of getting one for myself and modify the hand grip and the muzzle ring to an earlier one that would suit this type of paint job.

I have to agree with what everyone else said, that looks amazingly realistic.

How did you achieve such a convincing distressed metallic finish?

You nailed it Rob, it looks real which is exactly what you were going for I guess? :)
If you want to give it a bit of a sheen on the handgrip without ruining the colours you could try some graphite powder in a cloth and just give it a once over in places, but to be honest it looks just about right as it is.

Thanks everyone really appreciate your kind words.

Thanks Gary i think i'll leave it as is. my luck may run out and i'll make a mess of it.

Beavis wrote: How did you achieve such a convincing distressed metallic finish?

Bit of dumb luck really. As i said i had no idea how to do this as i have never really tried to weather anything. I used a mixed bunch of paints mainly as it's all i had, but this is what i did.
Primed with tamiya rattle can light grey primer. I then used a bit of 80 grit sandpaper to add a few scratches then a couple of coats of AK extreme metals steel, and then cleared with tamiya rattle can gloss clear, Mixed tamiya hull red and german to get the grey slightly brown looking, I then tore a bit of foam from out of a resin detail set and dipped it in the paint dabbed most of it off before doing a few on the blade, I then used AK OIF & OEF wash over it and when it had nearly dried i wiped it lightly with a rag to remove most of the wash and then used a cotton bud with some tamiya thinner and wiped along the edges to clean them a bit more and finally a light coat of tamiya rattle can matt clear. Hopefully that all makes since

Finished the scabbard and calling it done overall was going to try add some webbing to it but the owner is only going to use the bayonet
